Probably the best article I've seen about goldfarming, and the art in that article is quite good as well

Thanks for sharing. It's such a moral grey area and depressing view to me. On the one hand you want Runescape to succeed and not have people play it that just want to make money out of it. On the other hand, I would never want anyone to endure financial instability. I would most likely do the same in a similar situation if this opportunity to play Runescape was given to me.
I am very interested in what Jagex has to say about this matter.
why are these necessarily opposed? If content is designed with balance in mind it should be fine for loads of people to do it.
if loads of people can kill a boss and it be balanced, what does difference does it make to the economy if they sell the drop to train herblore or sell the gp to someone else to feed their family and that guy uses the gold to train herblore?
Either way the same total resources exist within the game. The guy who bought the gold cheated yea, but that doesn't actually make a difference to the economy.
Yea I mean there’s a limit right?
More and more people farming drops and selling gold isn’t good for the long term economy
I mean just look at stuff like Zalcano uniques and how pitifully cheap they are
There’s no way to properly balance when you don’t know how many people are gonna be farming at one time unless you do something like god wars where there is literally a max amount of kills per day of each boss and therefore a limit to how many rares can be dropped
The only other option is to constantly release new content so that there is always new stuff to do and new stuff to buy. The main issue here is power creep but hey until the game is no longer worth updating we should be okay
whats wrong with doing this?
I think mat talked about the venezualan situation in one of those shauny q and A's. He said if people were doing it to survive he'd understand, or something like that.
I don't actually find it all that grey because I think your two points go hand in hand: Runescape's success lies partially in it's ability to deter this kind of behavior, yes, but the fact that they actively try and deter it kinda makes gold farming more valuable. As such even though I know families are literally dependant on farming gold I don't feel so bad over the thought of Jagex taking action against them as that's the only thing that keeps it in demand. Win-win from my point of view.
