Post TRoS the EU should really have some room to breath. I actually think there is a genuine possibility that Thrawn plays a role in the post Skywalker Saga story as a main Villain/antagonist or a major player in some way.
That’s already being shown. 2 trilogies with Alphabet Squadron and Ascendancy, and the huge High Republic are all being made. The EU is becoming more important again already and it will probably only get bigger from here. Now Thrawn being a huge villain again I’m not sure about, but the EU is definitely going to start looking more like legends with the stories they tell. Hopefully, in the near future, every medium that Star Wars works in will be considered equal in importance (besides major films of course)

That certainly could be where things are heading given the rumours of animated and book characters coming to live-action (especially the Mandalorian, but perhaps also other shows)
I’d see him becoming more of an anti hero now instead of a true villain
I agree, I have only listened to the first new Canon novel of his so far but he was portrayed as more of an anti-hero than anything for sure (enjoyed the book, the audio effects were very high quality and entertaining).
With him you never know though, if he calculates it to be in his (or his people's) best interest, I could see him filling the vacuum the (probable) final death of Palpatine will be leaving in the Galaxy.

I feel like expecting him to be a big, main villain comes more from the legends version of him, than Thrawn as he's depicted in canon. Maybe if you've only seen Rebels, sure, he comes off as a big villain. But the books make it very clear that he's only really aligned with the Empire out of a desire to stop the Grysk.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's a nice guy or going to suddenly become a cuddly harmless Good Guy. Just that I see him filling more of a Saw Gerrera-esque role as a tenuous ally with questionable methods, than becoming the main antagonist.
This. We already got him in the EU in an amazing antagonistic role. No point in doing it twice, they have a chance to do something different with him now. The bigger threat is the Grysk. By the end of Rebels you could tell Palpatine was pretty much done with Thrawn. Thrawn never had an interest in the mainstream galaxy. He was always going to return home to the unknown regions eventually.
Yeah. He is more nuanced in the current canon than he was in the EU.
That and Ezra is with him, so that makes him into a more complicated protagonist than an outright villain.
Yup, exactly. He's the perfect recipe for a reluctant ally to Ezra.
I have a feeling Ezra may end up being none of the most important characters in the new Canon, up there with Ahsoka by the time his story is at an end. I have recently been rewatching Rebels and they are certainly setting him up to be something important.
Really interested to see what they do with him and Thrawn.
As Rebels was airing I always assumed Ezra would die right before the big Rogue One event. I love the fact that they're setting him up for something more (rumours of him being cast in a new Disney+ show), it makes his growth way more interesting.
I imagine Thrawn will take on a more anti hero role. Being wherever with Ezra is going to help develop him a bit more in becoming that. At the end of the day his loyalty is to the Chiss and ensuring they can survive the threat of the unknown regions (Grysk? I believe it is?)
Yeah, though remember that many remnants of the Empire evacuated to the unknown regions after Return of the Jedi, so it might not just be the Grysk...
That is true actually but I believe it may conflict a bit as there aren’t any current conflicts that the new republic had with the empire post battle of jakku, now of course they may have not been notified but I feel like it’s entirely possible that someone would have alerted them.
However in saying that if the imperial remnants did come into conflict with our heroes and it doesn’t reach the new republic then the chias are a lot more powerful then I once thought
Even if someone tried to notify them the threat might not have been considered credible. If some random ex-Imperial named Ivant just shows up and says that Palpatine's secretly alive and building an army the NR's gonna think "yeah, sounds like bullshit"
I feel like that would just be retreading the post-ROTJ EU, considering the sequels already ape the OT a bit too much and TROS already leaves things pretty much where ROTJ did.
But I agree it'd be nice to let the EU take the lead for a while. Just more original stuff, new stories for the new heroes.
Thrawn was a pretty small part of the greater EU. I don’t think having him be a villain means it will be a copy, esp given the different state of the galaxy.
Sure, but his trilogy kick-started the era, so he's fairly synonymous with that period of storytelling. Especially as we've essentially just had Dark Empire, too.
Okay, but my point is that simply having the same villain — when the context and the good guys would be completely different — isn’t retreading content.
But would he even fill the role of a villain post-ROTJ in the new EU? He’s been in exile with Ezra in the UR for the entire OT, and the Grysk are likely still a threat, so I would guess he will be a reluctantly accepted ally character in any content that deals with the Chiss and finding Ezra, whether it be the Rebels sequel or something else entirely.
If the Chiss Struggle with the Grysk doesn't go well I could see him leading his people into the Greater Galaxy as a means of escape. Kinda similar the Ancient Humans in Halo's EU: they weren't conquering Foreunner worlds as much as they were running form the Flood and trying to contain it.
After Rebels ending I don't think he'll be a main villain anymore or have any interest in the main portion of the Galaxy. His focus will be on reconnecting with his people and dealing with the Gyrsk which is why he went to the Empire in the first place to gain an ally against them. He could well show up as a villain in Cassian Andor during his younger days however.
*Rebels 2 intensfies *
Rebels 2: I guess we're rebelling against someone else now?
Perfect way to hype up the Chiss and unknown regions for the Rebels sequel.
Don't get your hopes up too high now.
YES!
I was for sure expecting a delay to next year.
Don’t know why they would delay it yet again. The book has been finished for a long time now.
Only reason High Republic is delayed is because of the halt in the other comic lines the past couple months that they have to catch up on and they want to have a grand launch together both Novels and Comics since it is an event series.

Yeah, if anything bring it forward to like July to fill the massive summer gap.
It'd probably be delayed due to printing or something, if it were.
That is a lovely cover
I wonder if there were any convention exclusive covers planned this year that are now in limbo.
I want to continue the collection. I’ve been lucky to get them all so far.
Im hoping Eli is a character in the rumored Rebels sequel because I feel like this prequel series means were not gonna see him for at least a couple years.
Also Im really hoping this series gets wacky and weird. They have a lot of possibilities on where they could go with the Unknown. For some reason Ive always imagined the Unknown Regions as being this bizarro place where very strange things happen.
Maybe cause it ties into the rebels sequel that will hopefully be announced promptly
A surprise, but a welcome one to be sure!
Marc Thompson SHOULD read all the star wars audiobooks.
Chaos Rising might as well be the title of this year. Of course it’s coming sooner than expected.

I hope we get something like Outbound Flight or references to it, if anything in new Thrawn books contradicts it let me know lol
That’s.... good news.
Oooo more Thrawn love
Is every hard cover going to have the blue pages? Sorry if that's been answered already.
For Blood Ravens!

While I wasn't a huge fan of the last Thrawn novel that was mainly due to being stuck within a Rebels timeframe. With this being set before the prequels it has a bit more freedom which will hopefully result in something good.
Absolutely, the first novel was amazing and the Rebels limitation really showed in the next two.
I'm just sad that Eli won't be in these next three.
I make custom Eli Funkos and they're so popular in my store, I'm honestly surprised with how many people commission him. He's such a great character, I hope we see him in more content.
Wait, Eli has a canonical appearance?!?
Could you share a link to your store? I'd like to buy one!!
He's in the comic adaptation of the first Thrawn book and he has some official art with Ar'alani!
(Ahh thanks for the interest! Not sure if links to stores are allowed, so the mods can remove this if it violates any rules: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/759458237/eli-vanto-custom-funko-pop-made-to-order?ref=shop_home_active_7&sca=1 )
To add on what others have said. Im pretty sure we got another look at Eli's appearance from some offical artwork shared for Thrawn Treason.

I believe that is Eli and Ara'lani but it could be Vahnya
Yeah they made a comic of the first Thrawn book so we saw Eli in that.
My dream is Eli being in the rebels sequel, should it exist.
He totally will be. I expect him and Ar'alani to be main characters.
If it's anything like what I'm hoping for, I'm guessing the first season will be a multi-line plot alternating between Ezra+Thrawn and Ahsoka+Sabine, with the plots gradually converging to a dramatic reunion in the season or midseason finale. Ar'alani and Eli would hopefully be part of the former plot, or perhaps in their own thread.
(think like TCW, where different episodes further different parts of the plot, or more preferably Game of Thrones, where multiple plots advance within a single episode—though the more constrained timeslot may preclude the latter)
Man I feel like I’m the only one who loved thrawn alliances. Anakin is my favorite character so seeing those two interact was amazing for me.
It’s one of my favorite canon books if not my outright favorite
Not just before the prequels; it's almost like a new universe, since it's deep in the Unknown Regions! It's almost like Episode IV all over again.
Which might actually be a weakness rather than a strength if Zahn's worldbuilding is lackluster; however, I'm optimistic. He definitely seems like the type to put some care into his construction.
I'm sure he'll just bring EU Chiss worldbuilding that he already did, so that's kinda not a problem
