MBP + eGPU

Currently have an 4 yr old custom PC with an MSI GTX 970 and a AW3418DW monitor. I mainly only use it to play League of Legends and remoting into a previous jobs server to do some side work. Separately I have an old late 2012 15” MBP connected to an AOC 1440p monitor that I do some personal interest coding on and personal productivity as I prefer the macOS environment over Windows.

Looking to purchase a 2020 13” MBP (or possibly the rumored 14” by the time I actually pull the trigger) and a Razer Core X Chrome eGPU with a RTX 2080ti to replace my whole setup and consolidate everything.

I know the LoL client doesn’t run well in macOS, so I assume I’d have to run it in Bootcamp, which I’m okay with. Which means an Nvidia card would be the way to go because I would be playing in Windows and my GSync would properly work with my AW3418DW... right?

Do you guys see any problem with my desired setup? What would change? Any concerns?

Thanks!!

Forget 2080ti. Buy two GCs.

  1. 5600xt for your eGPU and Mac combo
  2. 2070 super for ur PC

Then get accessories to link those two systems together so that you can share your screens, keyboard, mouse, external drive, headphones, mics and whatever else you have.

I had a 2080ti before, and 70% of the time I played Dota 2 on it. What a waste. And u mentioned LoL? So I sold it off with 0 loss and bought two GCs for my two environments. Couldn’t be happier.

Hmm... now there’s a thought. Thanks brother.

NVIDIA cards don’t work at all in macOS, if you weren’t aware. You’ll have to go AMD for macOS and Bootcamp compatibility.

So even though it won’t work in macOS, which I’m okay with since I’ll be gaming in Bootcamp, is there any effect of having it plugged into the eGPU while using macOS?

The power delivery should still function, but the display plugged into the GPU won’t work. I had a 980 Ti in my Core X before I purchased a Radeon VII, and there weren’t any issues aside from it not being usable in macOS.

Nvidia cards don't work reliably in bootcamp with 2020 13" MBP's yet. Have a look at the egpu.io forums. We've been working through it for a while and it's there's no guarantee it will work.
