If anyone knows anything about the adversity that one could face by being different, it's the guy with Chinese, black Jamaican, Russian-Jewish and Swedish heritage.

Wow that is a crazy diverse mix!

Doesn't he have a bit of Chilean in there as well? I might be mistaken though.

I feel like I already know the answer, but I'm curious to know exactly how much of his "bad" reputation is based in reality and how much of it is racist.

I’d say majority of it is racist. He got dragged haaard for wearing 66, even after Lemieux already said himself it doesn’t bother him. He got dragged hard for missing practice due to sleeping in, meanwhile Ovechkin does it and it’s “Russian machine party hard” memes and jokes. I’ve always been on the side that things JHS hasn’t really gotten a truly fair shot with the Isles organization. He’s not gonna light the league on fire, but he’s hell of a lot better than a lot of players in the NHL, and I feel like his situation with the Isles has been the definition of changing the goal posts. He’ll do everything that’s asked of him and then they’ll just go and change the questions.

You're talking about a bonafide NHL all star against a guy trying to crack the league, who has displayed levels of immaturity for quite some time. I love Ho-Sang and really wish things work out for him in some regard in the pros because he is fun to watch, but having read so many interviews with him and listening to his demeanor, I can see why he has had trouble finding a spot on the pro squad. I would be hesitant to say "it's because he's black/Jewish/Chinese".

Edit:

He’ll do everything that’s asked of him and then they’ll just go and change the questions.

You ask anyone who has watched him play the last few years and they will all say he turns the puck over incessantly and has a very hard time on defense. He's very flashy, but makes egregious mistakes. That shit will never fly on a defense-driven Islanders team. He hasn't done what's asked of him, this is a bullshit narrative.

Didn’t Kapanen on the Leafs miss a game due to sleeping in? Or behaviour issues or smthn? He didn’t get dragged. Obviously he doesn’t have trouble cracking the lineup, but he was a prime target for being traded this year. Plus he’s had some other shenanigans too I believe.

Exactly, the skill is definitely there and isles fans love him. But jhs without the puck is rough to watch.

I still love JHS and holding out hope he gets it together on the ice and makes right with Sweet Lou.

That’s a very bold statement. The majority of the reasoning he’s not in the NHL is due to racism? I’m not an isles fan either (I assume you’re Dallas) so neither of us have watched nearly enough of his game footage to know if this is true. Considering this sub constantly talks about him having the talent but overthinking plays, being too fancy, his commitment to defense and missing team meetings. Do you honestly believe someone with the skill level to contribute to an NHL franchise wouldn’t be played because of mainly racism? I think there’s a ton going on with JHS that’s been ongoing for years (that’s well documented) about him being a fringe player that has talent and always close but not quite there yet while the franchise waits for him to make that leap. It seems the past three years alone we heard every year is this the final year where the isles move on from JHS and then they wouldn’t but he also would still be in the system. I think he’s a fringe player with talent that is now probably ready for a new team.

It's been posted here a few times that his teams advanced stats were better when he's on the ice. Someone else might be able to find that and post it here.

TheCoolDoughnut•

I remember Zach Aston Reese had advanced stats that said he was the best defensive forward in the league and should be nominated for the selke last year (jokingly) He was only a 4th line grinder getting 7 minutes a night that was decent at defense but his advanced stats were not indicative of the whole story. I like advanced stats but we have to take them with a grain of salt. Statistically JHS wasn’t contributing. Again he has a lot of talent though especially offensively which is why the isles more than likely held onto him because he has all the tools he’s just struggled with transferring them in their system.

RytheGuy97:NHL-VAN7: VAN - NHL•

He’s had his chances, dude. His high is 12 points in 22 games, which isn’t bad, but since then only 2 points in 10 games. And while he’s doing well in the AHL he’s not lighting it up like a true NHL player would at his age.

He’s a fringe NHL player at best and I think even that’s pushing it. I wish this narrative that he’s actually a really good player that hasn’t been given a shot just because he was really hyped 6 years ago would stop.

Probably about 50/50. Easy target for people with an agenda if he isn't putting up the points to shut them up.

Nah definitely isn’t racist. Heard some stuff about the guy about having a huge ego and just didn’t care about working on his all around game. Frequent effort issues kept popping up too and missing practice occasionally because he overslept. And you have to be a clown to wear #66 especially when you aren’t even an established NHLer. Same thing with Kane, I’ve seen people question if the shit he gets is racism, it really isn’t, he’s an idiot too but I do like his play style. You don’t see guys like Smith-Pelly, Iginla, Simmonds, K. Miller, Oduya, PO Joseph, Mathieu Joseph, Reaves, etc etc. get bad reputation for a reason. It isn’t racism. Him and Kane deserve all the shit they get. And to some of these replies, he isn’t being blackballed by either. His game just doesn’t fit the NHL but he has the talent to turn it around

I thought this was a really well written statement. Not just in comparison to the other athletes that have been speaking out either. He put it just about as well as anyone I've seen so far. Definitely have a new respect for the guy, he is a thoughtful individual.
