How would you go about making a carrot cake cheesecake? Doneness vs dryness?

My dad likes carrot cake and cheesecake so I was thinking of making a carrot cake cheesecake for Father's Day. I've found two recipes.

This one you bake the cake first and then pour cheesecake batter on top and bake it. So the cake is basically the bottom "crust"

This one you pour cake and alternate dolloping cake and cheesecake batter.

The first one seems easier but do you think the cake will dry out from two bakings? The second one seems like you also might risk under or overdoing the cake.

Have you made something similar before?
