Featuring an artist/cosplayer because they’re black is still racist.

Featuring an artist because they’re black is still racist.

I am a huge participant with the cosplay community. So naturally, I follow all my cosplay friends on Instagram. And they’re all hardcore leftists, which I can respect as long as they respect that my opinion may differ. Now, I have no posted anything about the riots and issues going on as of late. I don’t feel like I need to brag about how I’ve helped on my social media, that just isn’t really my style. But all my friends? Oh boy, they are going WAY out of their way to prove they are NOT racists. I mean, I do feel like if you have to prove that hard, maybe you’re still a racist? I don’t know. I’ll never treat someone different because of their looks. That goes for skin color, birth marks, male or female, etc.

But the newest trend has me really upset. All of them are all of suddenly featuring black cosplayers to prove they support BLM. Here’s my issue though, they have said “go follow these black content creators to show you care.” They are basically saying “go follow these guys because they are black, not because they’re talented!” That’s all I hear and read from this. That’s like saying “go follow this cosplayer just because they’re white!”

As an artist and a cosplayer, I would HATE it if someone featured me because of one of my physical features that has nothing to do with the art. Shouldn’t we support content creators and artists because we admire what they do? Not because of how they look? It just seems like one giant ego boost in my opinion, that it’s defeating the purpose of treating them like equals.
