Advice needed: me (F) is worried my boyfriend is emotionally unavailable and I worry it may cause me to hide my own emotions

So this account is a throwaway for obvious reasons and on mobile so sorry for formatting issues and possible spelling mistakes

So a little background on me first so this makes sense, I grew up in a physically and emotionally abusive home, I was told that emotions were for the weak and wasn’t allowed to have negative emotions. So I grew up thinking that we all had to be strong and not cry obviously this wasn’t normal but I knew no different, I wouldn’t cry in front of people, I wouldn’t express myself or talk about my feelings at all. Well this is clearly not a good idea because a number of years ago I had a massive breakdown and ended up having to start intensive therapy so through this therapy I was able to rebuild myself and accept that my upbringing wasn’t normal and I was not weak for having emotions, I began to open myself up to talking through my life experiences and how I felt, I learnt.. yes learnt to cry in front of people, I allowed to people to hug me (always cringed away before could t stand people touching me) I eventually after many years learnt to love myself and be ok with having all the emotions that come with being me.

So now that I’ve explained that bit I can get onto the part I need advice on.

So my current boyfriend is great and I love him, he is kind and gentle but he has real issues with expressing his feelings and emotions but not only that he can’t understand mine, he doesn’t know how to react or comfort me if I become emotional he just stays silent. I have spoken to him about this and he just tells me he doesn’t know how to express himself and he doesn’t know what to do when cry etc. The problem is that since then I’ve tried not to get emotional around him or tell him how I’m really feeling in case I make him uncomfortable. my main worry is that I will start to shut myself down emotionally to keep him comfortable because I love him but I have such strong emotions and feelings at times that I know this will not be sustainable. Has anyone had any experience with an emotionally uncomfortable partner? (I don’t think he is emotionally unavailable I just think he honestly doesn’t know how to deal) and what if anything did u do? Like I said he is a great guy and I love him I don’t wanna force him to open up if that’s not who he is but I also want him to know that that’s not who I can be either. I need to know that if I have a bad day I can talk to him about it I would like to share the good and the bad with him, even if he can’t share that part with me! If I’m being a dumbass please tell me it’s just going around my head right now and I need advice on what I can do going forward. Thanks I’m advance
