AITA for fighting to be called “Nana”?

Asshole

My husband pointed out after 5 or 6 people replied to this post after the update that most of the people who responded didn’t bother to read past paragraph 2. Our education systems at work. 😕. See you later, Reddit

Ok here is the story, internet. I have two children: a son and a daughter. My son and DIL have two kids. My daughter and SIL are expecting their first child. They started talking recently about what my SIL’s mom (Dianne) and I should be called. We both said we wanted to be called Nana.

I didn’t think it was a pressing issue and figured we could work it out after the shutdown ended, but my daughter and SIL think it’s hilarious and have been cracking jokes about us fighting over this. 🙄. As a result, Dianne called me yesterday to figure this out. I explained that my son’s kids already call me Nana and it doesn’t make sense for some grandchildren to call me Nana and some to call me something else. My kids call me mom, my nieces call me auntie, my grandkids should call me Nana. Dianne doesn’t have any grandkids yet. Neither of us are in love with us both being called Nana because we think that would be confusing.

I threw out several suggestions for other names she could use but she rejected them all. There were a couple she flat out rejected and all the ones with the word “gran” in them she refused because being called “gran” anything would make her feel old. I thought she was joking and said “Well, once you start having grandkids you are old.” She said we would talk about this later and hung up.

Later my daughter and SIL called me saying that Dianne told them I was being stubborn and dismissing her feelings. My SIL is on my side because his mom has a tendency to be overdramatic, but my daughter is more in the middle and wants me to apologize for hurting her feelings and for us to figure it out. I’m willing to work it out but I don’t think I have anything to apologize for. I feel like she’s over sensitive and should not have involved our children in this ridiculous disagreement anyway. So, AITA?

Post! No fire hydrants!.h)&

Edit: I’m very confused by the responses. I am not creating drama or insisting she be called something else. I simply made a few alternate suggestions and she chose to get upset and involve our kids when I wanted to keep them out of it. I swear, some of you are just as sensitive as Dianne. You would never have survived the 60s.

Update: So, ironically Dianne just gave me a call apologizing for getting so upset and dragging our kids into this. Then she started telling me this loooonnnggg story about how she always wanted to be called Nana while crying. 😳 I mean, it’s not that serious. I told her we could do Nana Dianne and Nana Jody like many of you suggested. So thank you very much for that advice. The important thing is that we get along with each other and I need to remember going forward to treat her more delicately than I would a normal person.

As for the rest of you, I hope you get as emotionally invested in world hunger, human rights issues, and politics as you do in the lives of two little old ladies. Ha ha!
