Do we not care enough about academia to save it?

Maybe on the surface you guys see it as a naive and moot question, but this subreddit is filled with encouragement to leave academia, the initiated ones tell those who want to become an academic to "do something more useful", and we go out of our way to put pay-walls on The Chronicle and our journals then complain about why we can't make it on NPR or TED talks. This is the one of the only few occupations I know of where we don't take pride in what we do anymore.

Over 5,000 schools are about to close and I find it absolutely egregious that it is seen as just another failed business venture and to prepare to look for the new job, rather than the closing of research centers and being an outlet for sustaining democratic discourse? If anyone in here doesn't care enough to go out of their way and stand up for these core values, why can't YOU just leave already?
