Reviewing Mobile Racing Games...
I downloaded about 15+ kart/racing mobile games to try and review (I don't think there actually is many).
I think I found 3 that were good enough to recommend.
3 - 'Tabletop Racing' (worst of my picked 3)
This is based on the console versions of the same game and plays very similar, so it's pretty good with a good variety of modes, karts and things to do, but it is very simple and can feel quite boring so it's probably best for the more casual racers. I think it lacks a kind of driving style mechanic like drifting (although it has that as a mode) and also the tracks are all flat and short and there's not many. The item crates in this game for some reason are the exact same as CTR crates, strange.
I think I'm done with it.
2 - 'Beach Buggy Racing' (the original)
I've played this for about 3 days and is GOOD (for a phone game), it's not really a kart racer but plays more like quad bikes or 'buggys' obviously - which is unique and done quite well, there's a lot of thought in the tracks such as graphics well done, breakable blockages on the paths, lots of items, karts, and a good variety of game modes and a decent amount of shortcuts.
The tracks are pretty good and varied and make use of platforms, jumps, ramps etc really well especially for a mobile game but because of the bouncy mechanics parts can feel sluggish.
The game has a lot to offer like upgrading vehicles, unlocking more and progressing through the tournaments. Each character has a unique OP ability and systems of how the game work such as paying a ticket per race and earning money etc keeps it actually more fun than annoying (if you have to watch an ad if reaching zero tickets-which is quite rare). It's evident effort had gone into this game. Also, again there's an item crate as a random weapon in this game which again is identical to the Crash item crate - I'm seeing a trend!
'Rubberbanding' AI 1st place homing items can be a slightly annoying issue but the game is overall fun overall in a lot of ways, I'm sure you'll agree.
2 more Honorable mentions
- Beach Buggy Racing 2
It's better in a number of ways than the first game but there is no tournament progression which is what made the first game so great for me, it's a lot slower to progress with slower rewards, less options for games and more ads, also apart from a few new tracks-most are updated graphics versions from the old game which is kind of annoying, plus imo the new tracks aren't as good (apart from the western themed one) it is a good game, but boring if played excesively, even by the loot box system I think it's designed to be played for the long-haul.
- Beach Buggy Blitz
It's more of a 'runner' than a race game, which means you're always trying to go as far as you can which is tricky starting out but rewards make it easier, new areas unlock to keep it interesting but it's clear that it doesn't compete with it's predisessors because of this one simple repeating goal- though it might be quite addictive for some.
1 - 'Super Tux Racing'
I'm fairly new to this game so it's not an extensive review but it's my favorite mobile racing game I've played this far, most were too basic, not challenging enough or not fun enough, although graphics clearly aren't it's strong point - it's clear this game was made with love.
I know this won't be liked by everyone but I love the mechanics in this game, it's one of the few I played on that drfiting feels right, there's also drafting (using the wind blockage from the kart in front), and a big amount of characters with their own unique very different stats. Music seems great, tracks seem okay (lacks drops and ramps so far imo) but items are a little dodgy and kind of awkward, there's also boosts on the tracks which also feels a bit weird trying to hit during races but the speed boosts feel good. The AI is very challenging and there's more higher difficulties.
I could write another paragraph mentioning things like why using the steering while to accelerate feels good (along with reversing) instead of it driving automatically like a lot of other mobile racers but I'll just make a list of some points.
Also, there's definite references to CTR in this game as well, with couple sound effects and mechanics like hopping, there's so many racers that pay homage to our beloved classic X'D
Some Pros
- Seems to have a really good soundtrack
- drifting feels good when done successfully (may require you changing character)
- there's a rear view button
- plenty tracks and aren't short
- story mode with cutscenes
- hub world for adventure like CTR
- ghost modes and saving etc available (yes)
- has modes such as no items and
- has online and local multiplayer
- blue fire boosting is fun
- no ads
- has modes like time trial, battle, soccer, egg hunt etc
Some Cons
- seems items are a bit sparse, both in variety and difficult crate placements
- i haven't found a shortcut yet (and i love shortcuts!)
- i would like more unlocks and progression.
- some things like positioning, race length or distance from racers on a bar aren't shown
- obscure/non existent narrative in relation to tracks and characters etc
- feels a bit random and like an old lifeless PC game, and lacks any general theme
- drains phone battery fast
- not enough stunt moments in tracks
