Question about movie names

I know this may be the dumbest question in the world but what the heck happened with the naming of Star Wars movies? We went from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (and yada yada with the rest of the first two trilogies) to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I would get if they did it with Rogue One and Solo (Opting for the Star Wars Story instead). I'm not the biggest fan of Disney canon but it's always bothered me how they completely remove the Episode designation that was first established when Empire came out.

Is there any reason why they changed the naming of the series. Any link or source would be amazing!
