Roommates and house repairs

TL;DR: 3 roommates renting house from owner that lives elsewhere, a/c unit has Freon leak and “main” roommate is saying all the roommates should pay to fix it. I disagree.

I have been renting a room in a house with 2 other renters for the past few years. The owner does not live with us in the property. It’s been known the whole time that I’ve lived there that the a/c unit is malfunctioning and instead of it being replaced, the Freon has just been “recharged,” the costs most likely covered by the “main” roommate the last 2 years for whatever reason. Well it seems this year funds are tighter and now the main roommate is asking everyone to pitch in to fix it this time. She won’t contact the owner in fear that he will decide to sell the property instead of fix this issue. I don’t feel as a renter I should be financially responsible for any home repairs. Am I in the wrong here?
