Gave one of my player’s characters a cursed ring when he joined the campaign

The ring was one of those rings that you see with the inner track that spins around. The inner band was divided into eight sections each with a corresponding pair of letters on it. PR EN LU GL SL GR WR NO. Each section would correspond to a d8 roll with NO being the character being perfectly normal. The roll would take place twice per day and depending on the number rolled, the character’s behavior would change accordingly.

PR would have the character behaving in an extremely arrogant and cocky manner.

EN would have the character checking out his companions’ equipment and really wanting to steal it.

LU would have the character nearly constantly hitting on his companions, total strangers, enemies, attempting to seduce them

GL would have them frequently snacking, or ordering way too much food and drink at a tavern and insisting on finishing it all themselves

SL would cause them to sleep much more, be incredibly lethargic and apathetic. No motivation to really get up and do anything.

GR had them literally racing to beat the party rogue to the looting and trying to claim as much for him self as he could.

WR had him unreasonably angry, violent temper, and ready to pick fight with anyone/anything over the slightest hint of minor provocation.

The player was a fantastic sport about it, gleefully diving into Roleplaying each of the eight separate personalities, though he privately admitted to me that the “Normal” character was just outright bland by comparison. However the rest of the party quickly picked up that something was definitely wrong with the character and his magic ring that he refused to take off so they could examine it. He couldn’t bear to part with the thing. So after starting the sixth consecutive bar fight in a row, the party held an intervention and physically held him down and tried to remove the ring only to discover that it was stuck fast to his finger. (It was cursed after all)

The party cleric who had full and ready access to remove curse was magnificent in the scene. Bringing out his healer’s kit and sharpening a knife. He went through all the prep work, with the cursed character tied to a chair and his hand bound to the table top, going so far as to even putting a stick between the cursed character’s teeth and telling him you might want to bite down on this. He grabbed the hand, touched the blade of the knife to the finger above the ring... took a deep breath... and gently cast remove curse and easily slipped the ring off his finger. I let the party play out the entire scene and the tension and fear and relief was palpable, brilliantly roleplayed.

And that’s the story of my “niece’s” (she’s the daughter of two of my closest friends so naturally I’m one of the uncles) boyfriend’s character and the cursed ring of the seven deadly sins.

Let me know what you think of it, what could I have done better, would any of you consider using such a cursed item in your games, and if you do decide to use it, I’d love to hear stories.
