Yarn vomit

Every time I start a skein of yarn, I pull from the center. Every time it gets all tangled inside and I end up with yarn vomit. I’m beginning to believe I should just pull the outside string to stop the mess. (Not as bad as when the kids get to it but still an annoyance.) Any tips out there?
