Do you guys love carpeted floors or what?

I'm moving temporarily to the US. Every single small apartment has carpeted floors, most studios will even have a full carpet with a small cut-out for the kitchen! What's even worse, many landlords charge you a lot of money to deep clean it after!

So, why is it? Is it the cold? Do southern states don't use them as much? Do clumsy people like myself have multiple stains all over their carpet? Americans don't like eating or have a beer with friends in the living room?
