I think we need more police funding
Controversial title but after seeing a lot of signs and voices to "defund" the police I wonder if the opposite is needed. And I'm NOT suggesting the police need another military style tank or bloated administration. My dad's experience as a high school teacher got me thinking. I think there are parallels to teaching and policing in that quality varies widely by location, they both have very strong unions, the pay sucks, and they should ideally be important pillars of a community. I hear from my dad how hard it is to fire a bad teacher and one of the reasons teachers are paid less is because they have tremendous job security. So for policing lets get rid of the job security as a job benefit and pay them more. Up the quality of officers and make it easier to get rid of the bad ones. Officers also clearly need more and better training (which will cost money). And a common complaint about OPD is that they don't live here, so let's pay them a COL adjustment so police can live here and know the people they are sworn to protect.
I would hope everyone can agree as a society we need some form of policing. We just need better and more equitable policing. Lets incentivize good policing by attracting quality officers and quickly dumping the bad ones.
