Does this trick for booting burned discs actually work?

I found this while googling for ways to run burned discs on a GameCube, and while it appears to work, my BS sense is tingling. He doesn't show his burned disc failing to boot without using the trick, so it's entirely possible he's just a liar with a modded console. (He does point out the non-standard LED, but claims that it's the only mod.)

So basically, I want this to be true, but I'm justifiably suspicious, and thought I'd ask before wasting my time trying.
