Why no-one gets killed?

I was thinking about it recently, but I can't really find an answer. For example, if Blyke shoots someone, it makes through your body, so if he shoot you in the face, you are over. So it is strange that anyone died at least accidentally. Also, why didn't John just get a gun? It is safer than Blyke's Laser and he would can defend himself.
