I thoughtlessly insulted my roommate and I dont know how i can make it up to her.
Backstory; ive got this bad habit of speaking without thinking, there is essentially no filter between my brain and my mouth, and a lot of the time what i mean and what i say are like not remotely close to each other. So i accidently say something insulting at least once every week or two. Honestly i think the lack of filter comes from my ADD, but im not going to pretend its just okay. I say insulting stuff, and intentional or not, I Am The Asshole because of it.
Long story long, i live with two roomates, both long time friends of over 10 years. Lets call them Roomy 1, and Roomy 2. Last night the three of us were sitting around the table, and i dont remember how the conversation came to this, but at some point Roomy 2 (who is a tall, heavy set lady. She's got the body type of an Olympic weight lifter but without the muscle) said "At least nobody can mistake me for a chad, or an incel."
To which Roomy 1 said "Well, no ones going to call you a chad." When roomy 2 asked what that meant, i butt in and said,
"Someone who doesn't know you might look at your body type and make assumptions about your personality." And part way through saying this, i realized that it wasnt coming out as 'the only way that mistake could be made is if someone was an asshole tried to judge you based on your appearance,' which was how i meant it, and it was coming out as 'people will think youre an incel because youre fat,' instead. I immediately apologized, and then i did again a few minutes later.
The thing is, this isnt the first time ive done something like this. I hurt her feelings when i tried to explain bingo wings and used her arm as an example, and a couple weeks ago i mentioned an old haircut that looked good at the time, but stylistically didnt age well (you know those monstrosities from the 80s? they look terrible now, but they looked great at the time. that was what i had meant). and i do still feel really bad about those.
I know she's still mad at me, and thats fine. Thats fair, i deserve it and feel bad for what i did. I want to keep apologizing but i dont want it to just turn into empty words, or come across as 'im sorry because i feel bad, not because i hurt you', which i think is considerably worse. I thought about an apology gift, but i worry it will come across as trying to buy forgiveness.
I want to make it up to her but im worried anything I do will be an empty gesture, what should i do?
