EI and toxic environment

I have taken classes on EI and difficult conversations. However, my department has very toxic and dysfunctional people (cliques, gossip, backstabbing etc.). When I talked to one or two people, they doubled-down and increased the intensity. Does dealing with these people worth it? Do I stay or leave?
