Grand Arena Matchmaking Question

Does anyone else run into grand arenas that are pointless to even attempt? I’ve been running into a lot of opponents who outmatch me in every way. Am I doing something wrong upgrading my characters? Should I be upgrading only like 30 characters period and leaving the rest of my entire collection as weak as possible to keep my galactic power down? It’s kind of annoying to keep auto losing grand arenas.
