Why do so many motorsports events take place on Sunday?

I tried googling for an explanation but never found one. Seems to be the preferred day for races, track days, and such. I remember Gran Turismo had a "Sunday Cup" as well.

What's so special about Sunday racing? Why not Saturday or Friday?
