Air travel with handgun

Looking to get an insight on air travel with your pistol? What are your experiences and the ease/difficulty of the whole process. I’ve seen the videos online of TSA demonstrations but wanted to see how people are actually packing theirs; what kind of case you use, etc.

Will be flying to a state that honors/recognizes my CPL.

I understand it needs to be locked in a hard case. Can that case be placed inside a checked luggage or is it considered another piece of luggage?
