HELP with clipping - recording Audio in Ableton (with focusrite scarlet 2i2)

Hi everyone - I am a singer/pianist/flautist who is struggling to learn Ableton. I've just started recording using my audio interface in Ableton but have really been struggling to understand how to avoid clipping. I was under the impression that it won't be clipping as long as the black part of the audio recording doesn't touch the sides of the track (or that there's a decent cushion of space around the sound). HOWEVER: I recorded two different takes of flute where each of them has approximately the same amount of space around the black part of the audio, however one is causing the master fader to go into the red zone and the other one isn't. Why is one of them clipping and the other one isn't when each audio signal takes up a similar amount of space? Also i'm not sure why I can't post pictures here? but if I can I have screenshots.
