I (24F) am feeling guilty about wanting to break up with my boyfriend (27M) after seeing several red flags
We’ve been together for over a year and our relationship has always been extremely easy. We are both relaxed people, so we generally don’t argue or fight over anything. However, I noticed early on that he struggles with basic parts of a relationship: he’s not verbally or physically affectionate, has a hard time with communication, and he has difficulty with visualizing a future together rather than living in the present.
He currently lives at home rent free and has no plans of leaving. He’s lived on his own before, but has always rented houses cheap from his parents or friends parents so he has no true sense of what living in the “real world” is like. We live in a pretty expensive city and I live in a luxury apartment. When I first moved in, he would constantly start sentences with “when i move in...” but stopped doing so when I asked him when he was planning on actually moving in. He claims it is out of his budget which I know isn’t true because we work together and he makes almost as much money as I do. He also has a tendency to splurge with money. Buying exercise equipment for his home, new tech stuff, and new gear for his expensive outdoor hobbies.
He had a fairly unusual childhood that i think affects the way he operates in a relationship. His parents are not loving or nurturing. Though he lives with them, they rarely speak or see each other. Neither parent praised him or told him they loved him when he was growing up and his parents are not affectionate with him or each other. I think that’s why affection is so foreign to him. I express and accept love in the form of physical touch, quality time, and words of affirmation, and he struggles greatly with all of those things. I’ve brought it up to him before and he has acknowledged his shortcomings and promised to work on it but never has. Most recently, I broke down on the phone with him at the beginning of the year because I couldn’t remember a time that he has ever called me beautiful or pretty. During this breakdown, I flooded him with feelings that I had been having: whenever I ever ask him to tickle my back, he’ll do it for less than a minute before claiming his hand is cramping, we go months without having sex, he doesn’t compliment me, he has no plans of moving in, and he prioritizes little things over spending time with me which makes me feel extremely unimportant and not valued, and he comes over two times a week at most. He was silent but seemed genuinely upset. He asked what he could do to fix this. I basically told him he’s a grown man and it’s not my responsibility to teach him how to treat me. Listen to what I’m saying upsets me and do the opposite.
Things have not improved. It has been over three months since that conversation and he still has not improved even one thing that I brought to his attention. About three weeks ago I brought it up again and he blamed his behavior on the stress from COVID and his newly developed self diagnosed depression. He told me that everything will be better for us when COVID ends, but there is no end in sight. I checked out of the relationship after that conversation and have been a sitting duck since.
I want to end things because I am not happy and have felt single for months because I’m not getting things out of the relationship that I need, but this talk of him possibly having depression makes me question it all. My last relationship ended because my depression got out of control and i felt like my partner gave up on me because of it. It makes me feel guilty that I might now be doing the exact same thing. Looking for advice and an outsiders perspective.
TLDR; I’ve brought up the shortcomings of my relationship to my boyfriend several times without anything improving. He is now claiming to have depression and it makes me question if I should wait out the depression or if it’s just another excuse.
