is there any indicator built in to show pipe length for use of pumps?

i'm seeing that i have to use a pump every x meters of pipe, but i'm not sure how to measure the pipes. i can see that the volume of the pipe increases as length increases, are we supposed to know the radius of the pipes and derive the length based on pipe volume?
