What does being Waitlisted for an Event mean?

So I just said yolo and signed up for this local event going on in a few weeks and I am on the wait list does this mean I’ll be able to play still or I’ll only be able to play if people don’t show up?

Also this is my first event ever so any other tips or things I should know will be helpful!
