Dany and Jon as POV Characters (Spoilers Extended)
Ive read before (but can't find the quote now) that GRRM didn't want to have any kings as POV during the War of the Five Kings.
He also later regretted that it seems solely bc he felt it gave something away:
Aside from possibly making the Westeros universe smaller, Martin also revealed that “if I had to do it over again, I would make Robb a point-of-view character right from the beginning.” Because he did not, Martin thinks readers were able to foretell Robb’s destiny, and if there is one thing Martin hates to do in his books, it is give his readers clues. -SSM, Vanity Fair Interview: 15 November 2013
Lets discuss Dany and Jon's statuses as POV Characters
Going into TWOW and the upcoming Dance of the Dragons II, I thought it would be interesting if GRRM decided to show the second Dance through advisors, etc. and not through the dragonriders (I am unsure how I feel about this).
#Daenerys
It is possible that once Tyrion and Dany meet (they are apart for a good portion of TWOW) that one could possibly stop being a POV:
What got me a little bit anxious is that since if they meet and interact with each other, those interactions can be shown only through the eyes of only one of them. Not much point having the same chapter twice in one book, right?
That leads to the question: does this mean that you intend to retire one of them as a POV (at least for a time) or separate them somehow, so that you don't have to "retire" one of them?
GRRM: No Comment (although it must be noted that the no comment could be solely since the post was about Meow Wolf)
Which would make sense as GRRM has stated he will begin to cut down on the # of POV's going forward:
as some of the POVs he eliminates might only be because of duplicity and not death.
#Jon
Jon is dead/dying at the end of ADWD, and he will be resurrected (waking the stone dragon) at some point. Due to the fact that Cat loses her POV status after being resurrected:
GRRM: And by the way, there will no Catelyn POVs in future volumes, which may tell you something. -SSM, UnCat: 22 August 2000
It is possible that Jon could too (although him warging ghost is a good alternative for him staying as a POV).
In this case it seems like that Mel and other northern POVs (Theon/Asha/Bran/Arya/Sansa/Davos) could take over for Jon.
From u/bryndenbfish's awesome Ultimate Winds of Winter Resource we know that:
-
Dany is likely to have at least one POV in TWOW (writing about the Dothraki)
-
Jon Snow is currently one of four* unconfirmed POV characters for TWOW (I agree with his analysis on that) but will likely get at least one chapter
It also should be noted that just because someone loses their POV status in one book, they can regain it in another.
In conclusion, I don't think there is enough evidence to decide, but I think the possibility exists.
“The way my books are structured, everyone was together, then they all went their separate ways and the story deltas out like that, and now it’s getting to the point where the story is beginning to delta back in, and the viewpoint characters are occasionally meeting up with each other now and being in the same point at the same time, which gives me a lot more flexibility for killing people.” -SSM, Rolling Stone: 21 August 2014
TLDR: Nothing too crazy, just wanted to explore any possibilities that the way the Dance of the Dragons II could be presented from a POV style similar to the War of the Five Kings
