FRUSTRATED MAMA VENT

I don’t know how to start this I’m just so incredibly sad and frustrated and my best friend is due in a couple of weeks so I don’t want to stress her out with my problems which is why I’m here.

My son is a chunkier boy. He’s always been. He’s extremely healthy. Never once did we have any health issues (knock on wood.) yesterday my husband came home and his parents were here. He made a comment that I should feed him less because he’s fat. He is 8 months so I snapped and said, “you did not just ask me to put an 8 month old baby on a diet.”

Anyway today his mom is here and I fed him some solids 1hr ago he didn’t eat much and he’s not drinking much of his formula. So I made 120ml for him before his nap. And she makes a comment “he ate an hour ago.” IM so upset that they have the nerve to make these comments. He’s not obese, he’s very healthy.

I’m just so angry.. I had nowhere to vent. Why do people feel the need to tell me how to feed or raise my child?

OHHH and earlier husbands father asked if we should put baby in the pool. So I went to check the weather and his mom who is ALWAYS cold said NO it’s not hot. It’s 27 Celsius.. it’s HOT. pool would have been fine. I put warm water in it anyways. So I went for a walk with the baby because I’m just so fed up.

I’d upload a pic of baby but I don’t know how to to the thread.

You are 100% right. Baby is not fat. Babies can’t be “overweight”...they only eat when they are hungry. Almost all babies get cute and round in months 6-12, because once they start crawling/walking/RUNNING they burn calories like a hummingbird. No pediatrician will tell you to moderate calories for an infant under two, because they grow so fast at that age and they need energy for proper brain development.

Sounds like your MIL has her own issues with body dismorphia or an eating disorder, and is projecting it onto your baby. Deal with it however you want — ignore her, educate her, say something snarky (my personal fave)...just know you are definitely right! You got this mama! Enjoy your walk!

Thank you! And it’s very true. Some days he eats quite a bit other days a lot less. He eats when he’s hungry. I’d like to be snarky but English is her second language so it may be interpreted wrong.. I’d rather not be on their bad side 😂

So rude. Unless the baby's DOCTOR says the baby is overweight and you should be concerned, it is completely uncalled for. Babies are supposed to be chunky, not scrawny. It's good for their brain growth and their immune system.

I’m a dietitian who worked with babies and young kids, and I agree. Once he starts walking he might slim down. It’s really when they’re closer to 2 years old that we look closer at weight for height.

If baby was being overfed, then he would throw up. That’s the great thing about babies is if they’ve had too much they stop or get rid of it. You’re the mommy and that’s that. Unfortunately, people will give their opinions and say nasty things the rest of our lives. I’m sorry for that, but you’re not alone and you’re doing great! Tell your in-laws that your boy is happy and healthy and that’s all that matters!!

I said “if I don’t give him enough milk during the day, he’ll wake up more during the night.” And I got a look. But I know it’s unfortunate that everyone around us feels to comment on how we care for our children. Don’t get me wrong it’s my first baby so it’s a lot of new things for me and I welcome advice but things like this frustrate the living hell out of me. Thank you for the support and reading my vent. :)

Nowhere to vent? Where the hell is your husband? Why isn't he defending his kid? Or his wife, for that matter?

He’s the one that started the whole thing with his comment.
