The movies are like a remake of the original anime series. So you can reasonably skip that if you’d like. The 2016 anime continues where the movies/original anime series left off.

All the adaptations leave things out. The best way is just to start from volume 1 of the manga and press onward. Don't bother trying to start after the golden age, don't try skipping the golden age just because you've seen the movies. You'll most likely see things in a different light. You may also like to check out the 97 anime series which covered the golden age as well (a little better in my opinion), if you're killing time as you get the manga.
This is great advice. I’m stoked to see a diff perspective so I’ll check out the 97 anime while I want for my first few volumes. Thanks mate. The ending of part three really blew my mind. Total genre shift
I agree with u/SpaceNewtype. Start from volume 1. I first read the manga about ten years ago, and even after reading it four times, I'm still contemplating all of the information and nuance of the story and characters.
The only thing I would suggest is to take your time while reading. There are a lot of subtle visual parallels and moments of foreshadowing that are easy to miss if you read too quickly.
