Question about sharing family information

Advice/Help

EXMO here. My extended active family keeps asking for my kids names and DOB for an album or heritage record. Should I be concerned? Are they trying shenanigans?

I would vote for shenanigans just because I like that word. I absolutely would not share the information.

Dont give those out! Mormons post them to genealogy sites (owned by the cult who uses them for religious purposes) and turn them over to church recorders too, as well as missionaries. Keep that shit hella private or else the cult will exploit them. In the age of ID theft, it should not be passed around anyway

It’s not that they may be up to no good it’s that a lot of these family members post the stuff on a website regarding family history and then your child’s names, birthdates and other information is out there for everyone and linked to Mormon elements

Thank you! I thought so. My day job is cyber security. I’m concerned. I was also concerned about elder visits or stealing names for baptism for the dead.

Thanks! Very true on never wishing a happy birthday.

I called and got more details. They want to do a family tree for a 100th family reunion celebration. I’ll have my eye on this!

As a Nevermo nonpro genealogist for my family, I'm conflicted. I collected all info and the site I used didn't show personal info on living folks, just the person's first name/last name. But, seeing your history with people being tracked down, I can understand your hesitation and agree with you. I made a handmade family tree, bigger than poster sized, with all info on it, but it was for personal use.
