I really love the over-all theme. Kind of de-romanticizing things that have been overly romanticised. Going the opposite way and finding the sickness in the pleasure.
I think it needs to be developed a little bit more though. The first stanza is solid but maybe dive deeper into the second and maybe even make it longer if you need to to get your point across. I can see this hitting so hard when its done though!
Yes. Love this. After scrolling through a lot of mediocre stuff, I really dug this poem. We love “romanticizing” life, and don’t realize sometimes how ugly and sick a lot of life is. The beauty of a Van Gogh is inspired, at least in part, by poison. The relationship between beauty and danger has always been curious to me. The most beautiful visions have some sickness to them, and what consciousness was ever birthed without pain? Thank you for helping us cut through the bullshit!
This is an interesting idea, and I liked what you brought out of it for the most part, but I think there is still something missing on the subject to quite make it shine in the poem.
So what I understood of the poem is that the author is making the case that the romanticised vision of Van Gogh eating yellow paint is bs, and that it was actually not a pursue to escape the misery but actually to further drown in it, as in taking the poison. Which is a very nice parallel to self-destruction and why romanticising this kind of pain is actually really disingenuous. Since it's usually a result of an egocentric entitlement to safely distance yourself from the world and its suffering. Now, I don't know if you follow this by every word (I'm by no means asking you to agree with me) and that's where I think the poem could use a little improvement, you've said the romanticising is bs, but the reasons were not very clear for me. It felt to me like you tried to present somewhat of a reason on the second stanza but I couldn't quite grasp it. So perhaps consider expanding the poem a little to expose these reasons.
One last thing: In the 8th line of the second stanza isn't it supposed to be "Or calls these poisons"? Just an honest thought, I don't have the best English so Im not sure.
Anyways, great poem! Thanks for sharing it :)
