Craigslist - odd client wants to send me 7 laptops
Hello Reddit,
I need some advice regarding a craigslist deal. I'm a student in the UCF/Orlando area and after going to best buy and seeing their outrageous prices for geek squad help, decided I'd make a post on craigslist offering my services instead. I've never used craigslist before, but I got two responses pretty quickly, one of which is still ongoing. So far so good.
The weird thing is, this guy I have never met, who selectively ignores my questions for any of his contact info, is getting ready to have his secretary cut me a check and ship out 7 laptops to me for repair.
Other questions he has failed to answer include:
- Whether or not he needs the data on the laptops backed up or if I can just straight out reformat
- Where he is located (even by city or state)
This makes me very nervous because it seems unusually sketchy to want to ship out so many computers (granted they're only pentium 4s) to some guy you've only talked to via email and not want to meet them in person. I know craigslist also warns about working with people not in your local area, as well as accepting payment in any form other than cash. While the money would certainly be useful and I would like to fix his computers for him, I'm worried that I might be missing something here and somehow get trapped.
Any suggestions or redditors who have been in a similar situation? Thanks for your help.
