What things have you done while in severe pain to take your mind off it?

Punch a cheese grater - that will take your mind off your tooth.

Without a doubt!

Advil and video games helps me get my mind off things while in pain

I'm jealous. I'm dreadful at video games.

I’m really sorry

I appreciate that! Tooth pain is right up there with the worst of it. Hopefully I can get in to my dentist in the morning.

Oh good luck with that. I’m going through emotional pain, but I’m a guy so nobody really cares

Games on mobile is my go-to. Sometimes I read a book. I might visit r/chronicpain. I take walks, but that is mostly mental health, etc.

Mental health care is important in these times too! I think I may try to read a bit. Great idea. Thank you!

Watch YouTube, play mobile games, watch movies, scream internally, sleep.

I've got like 5 spinal problems so when I was waiting on medication all I could do is lay down and suffer

2
CFofIOP•

Oh man. This really seems so temporary after considering recurring spinal pain. I'm sorry!

Like I have medication for it now plus another treatment that's seemed effective so it's a lot better than it was :)

2
CFofIOP•

Oh I'm so glad you found relief!

Thank you! It's not fully gone but it's definitely better than it could be.

I try to pet my dog but she’s always with my mom so I just suffer in bed

2
CFofIOP•

Gotta get those pets in when you can huh?

Slept.

I cracked a tooth at dinner this evening and exposed a nerve. The pain is just awful as it shoots across my lower jaw and into my ear and neck. There are no 24 hour emergency dental services near me, I'm stuck with this horrible pain until sometime in the morning at the earliest.

I'm wondering what others do to help relax and get their minds off their severe pain or discomfort? All advice for diversions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Oof I feel for you OP, I had something similar happen to me recently and I REALLY benefited from gargling with salt water and using a hot water bottle until I could see a dentist

2
CFofIOP•

Thank you for reminding me of this! I'd forgotten this helped in the past.

If you live in a smaller town, the dentist sometimes have an after hours number. I’d call and listen to their voicemail just in case. Most dentists don’t want you to be in pain. Maybe they could give you something to help with the pain until they can work on it.

2

I did call actually and there's unfortunately no after hours number, but I'm hoping that they'll have something open in the morning. I was hoping they'd have something.

Our hospital does a nurse on call and I rang them to see if they had any advice (I was hoping for a dentist on call, actually) but no such luck. They suggested all the usual stuff.

Sorry to hear. Best wishes, I feel for ya.

Try rubbing anbesol on the gum around the tooth it will numb it.

Lots of aspirin or Advil, if they don’t work try Aleve.

Alcohol (swish something sugary like brandy around the tooth) and/or cocaine (topically applied or snorted) work wonders if that’s your thing.

Banging your head against a wall has its merits, but be mindful of the brain damage... it only seems worth it now...

I might send my husband out for some Ambesol, hadn't thought of that in ages. Thanks for the advice!

They have varying strengths. Don’t play games, get the strongest one

2
CFofIOP•

Oh I won't. This is no joke.

Take copious amounts of illicit opioids

1
CFofIOP•

Are you telling me this is what you do or suggesting I take them?

If it's a suggestion that I take them I'm afraid that's out of the question.

2
throwyaydj1838299•

Just kidding lol, although if you have Ibuprofen or Tylenol that might somewhat help.

When my finger was slammed into a door, I just ran around in circles for like an hour so I guess you could try that.

2
CFofIOP•

I took a few Advil immediately after.

I know what you mean about the walking in circles! I've been rubbing my hand down my thigh when it surges.

Hope your finger healed!
