Its literally just about him. Dean is a fucking shitshow of a ref and a cunt to boot. There's no sporting reason to caution someone for that, but it sure as shit will get you talked about.

Completely showed up the ref there. May as well have kicked a water bottle or played after the whistle at the Camp Nou

Lmao this is why I love Guendouzi. Shame that it had to come to this.

You just reminded me of it... FFS! They don't even hide their bias against us, especially that tosser Mike Dean.

Dude we get cards faster than any other team for sure

Treadbucket•

I’ve simply come to accept that we’re Arsenal, and the referee won’t be on our side, so we have to do way more than other teams to win.

It’s an injustice, surely, but it’s done wonders for my mental health not expecting anything. The odd good call here and there feels so much more satisfying, too.

17
TheHairyPatMustard•

We are we so despised by refs? Is it because Wenger constantly called them out for the clowns they are?

And then you have ManU with 19 penalties

EDIT: Not even joking, our players don't dive as much imo as other top 6 teams. If we go down easily we would do better.

Saka actually had an opportunity to go down today before the pass to Lack (and low Schmeichel save), but stayed in his feet. I guarantee Vardy would have gone down.

That really gets to me, how most other big teams do it so much more than we do, yet we have the chant about us being cheats.

Gaslighting.

2
LogicalReasoning1•

Honestly the vast majority of Man U pens have been justified. It’s just for some reason most clubs seem to have to get fouled to a much greater extent to win a pen.

15
domin8668:35: Martinelli•

We don't really have dribblers who would get into duels in the box. Pepe might become one but he's a bit too inconsistent imo.

3
peoplepersonmanguy:19: ready for a LAP dance.•

This is it. We pass into the box, referees often see defenders getting late to the ball as '50-50' challenges, and don't take into account if you are both going for the ball and one of them takes the player instead its a penalty. "hur hur they are alllowed to challenge for the ball" sunday league bullshit.

VAR is just a tool, give it to absolute clowns and they'll still make a mess. English refereeing needs totally revamped, the structure is shocking and the funding and support is worse.

half this shit was very unfair, I don't care what anyone says but our players seem to get cards very quickly. Just look at the fouls Evans and other leicester players had and tell how many times our players got booked for shit half as dangerous as those

would be nice if refs were fair to us for a change. but as a matter of fact, they’re all probably congregating right now, tickling each other’s willies because they’ve fucked us over once again

Qtn68:1: Leno•

I guess this includes the yellows given for "breathing air as an Arsenal player" and "drinking water as an Arsenal player because running makes you thirsty" right?

25
InTheMiddleGiroudAubaSigns•

Sarcastically placing the ball (Dean), getting fouled in the box by Sheffield United (Dean), remark that maybe, dear sir, three Palace-players kicking Chambers is not a valid reason to take away a goal (Atkinson), casually remark that the the two armed pull from behind on Guendouzi could be a second yellow (Pawson).

Or as the referees call it: Another yellow for Arsenal.

35

The Chambers foul that resulted in Sokratis' disallowed goal will always rankle with me. I cannot believe that decision to this day.

Absoltely ridiculous, it's a symbolism of the absolute shitshow that is English refereeing, it seriously needs revamped from the ground up - to think the PL is meant to be the best we've got as well!!

VAR is just a modern tool for them to make the usual arse of things. I don't know if there's a way to analyse bias statistically but I'd be very interested to see how our figures compare with other teams.

8
Firista•

Now that Arteta has his feet under the table he should come out publicly about shit like this. Throw your big bollocks around and put refs on the spot

Liverpool commit far more professional fouls than we do but constatly get away with it. Whereas whenever Xhaka or Kolasinac or whoever else do it, they usually get booked, it's a joke

8
WalterAlgreens•

For real. Perhaps one of the reasons we used to be top of the fair play table is that if a referee made a questionable call against a Wenger team, he would be giving the 4th official an earful. He got in trouble pretty frequently for being not so nice to referees, and I think they feared him.

Which is not to say Arteta needs to scare referees into making calls in our favor. Just that if they make objectively terrible calls, you need to put pressure on them to STOP FUCKING US OVER.

2
PygmyDynamo•

TLDR: The current Arsenal lineup is woeful at ref management, meanwhile some on this subreddit are getting twisted about a bias against Arsenal instead of understanding why other teams get away with worse fouls.

As a kid, I was taught about a thing called "ref management". The notion that the ref is neutral is naive and should be discarded. They may start the game neutral, but refs are easily sway-able authoritarians with thin skin, like a cop or substitute teacher. If you mouth off to them, ignore their instructions, constantly complain, make them feel small, etc. and then someone on your team does something that seems intentional or quasi-dangerous, you're gonna get booked. If you appear to play a clean game and make the ref feel like they're doing a good job, and then ("accidentally") foul an opponent, apologize, act respectful, the ref is several times more likely to see it as part of the game, let it slide, or give you a verbal warning.

Here's the catch: Ref management is not limited to the individual. It is a team effort. The whole team gradually "wins over" the ref, or gradually alienates them. Many of the veterans (Sokratis, Laca, Luiz, etc.) are fucking awful at ref management, and others like Guendouzi and Ceballos seem to look for opportunities to make the ref feel small. After a few shitty interactions into each game, most refs are ready to give Arsenal a card, their finger on the trigger. Meanwhile, of course Liverpool gets away with snapping someone's spine in half, because even their shithousers (e.g. Robertson) know how to keep a facade. The people suggesting Arteta should throw a tantrum are wrong, wrong, wrong, that will only result in Arsenal getting more cards and fines to boot.

Maybe ref management is not taught anymore, or it goes by a different name now. Since no one is mentioning it in these "WTF another card?!" threads, I expect this to be a bitter pill (at best) or nuked from orbit.

7
Boopdelahoop:05-06h:•

Nobody wants to hear this but it's true. The idea of the ref as a neutral party is a blatant falsehood, they are "thin-skinned authoritarians". Wenger rejected this premise and strived for better refereeing, but it's the world we live in and we'd be fools not to adapt to it.
