Hey reddit, should I change my name for my career?
Hi reddit. I'm a 24 year old filmmaker just starting production on a film that I hope might be my "breakout" piece.
It's a short film but I have a good production company attached and the script has had incredibly positive feedback from a variety of successful writers, directors and producers - I am hoping that it will compete for some of the more prestigious short film awards and ideally result in me getting a deal for my feature (touch wood).
I'm having a dilemma though: should I keep or change my name - I need to make this decision now as it's my first opportunity to have any "capital" associated with my name.
People I know cannot be trusted to help me on this one as the objectivity of their opinion will be compromised by their relationship with me. So. Total strangers. Please let me know honestly. Could you see yourself going to the cinema to see a film made by...
Jon Plant
should I change it to
Jonathan Plant
should I include any element of my middle names
Philip Foster
or should I drop any permutations of my birth name here and now and start looking for something different?
Alternately, do you think that the name itself is totally irrelevant and any associations people would have with it would be determined solely by the quality/success of my films? Please let me know what you think.
This is an unusually shallow concern for me, but please don't judge me too harshly - If I'd been born with a name like Ridley Scott, Jean Renoir, Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles or Francis Ford Coppola I wouldn't be having this dilemma!
