Dealing with an unexpected break-up
I see a lot of posts here where people ask advice on how to deal with a break-up (especially when it's unexpected). My girlfriend of almost 2 years broke up with me unexpectedly last month (after telling me how she planned to spend the rest of her life with me the week before). Needless to say my whole world was turned upside down. However, as the days progressed I've been feeling a lot better and I'd like to share some advice that might help others if they should ever face this unfortunate situation. I'm doing this on an hour of sleep so I apologize for any grammatical and spelling issues.

Don't hang onto false hope. If you think there is any chance, whatsoever, that you both will get back together you will never move on.

KEEP BUSY. You'll start to think about her / him more and more if you are lying around on your bed then if you are keeping active. Exercise, go out with friends, etc. Having fun and not thinking about the ex will help you to get over him / her.

Do something you've always wanted to do. Relationships are time consuming and chances are there was something you've always wanted to do, but didn't while you were with your SO. Now's your time to invest you time and energy into this project. For example, I published a poetry book: http://www.amazon.com/Drops-Hazel-Sky-Collection-Poetry/dp/1461155193/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1306884640&sr=1-1 (shameless plug I know). I wrote some poetry back in the day but never got around to completing a book and took the opportunity to do after my ex broke up with me.

No Facebook, Twitter, etc. Wherever your ex is active in the Social Media world avoid at all costs. This is the one area I haven't 100% followed through with yet (I removed Twitter and FourSquare, but check Facebook every once in a while). You will over-analyze everything and once you see that they are hooking up with someone else it will likely upset you tremendously. Just avoid it.

Go out and hook up with someone else. Some people might disagree with this, but I found that with this relationship and previous ones that once I hooked up with someone else I felt a lot better. I'm not saying to go out and date immediately (probably a bad idea), but enjoy single life. Chances are your confidence is shot so why not give it a boost?

Do not text, e-mail, Facebook message, etc. An obvious one, but a rule often forgotten when drunk. They don't care that you saw a poster that reminded you of that date you had last year. No matter how much you think it will help it will only prolong you getting over your SO.

Lean on your friends. Your friends likely missed being able to hang out with you all the time so take advantage of that. No one likes a Debbie Downer, but don't be afraid to vent a little to them. My friends made me realize how much better off I was without my ex by putting things into perspective.
Hope this helps!
