Does the belief in an afterlife cheapen real life?

So, that's the question, if people didn't believe in heaven, hell, reincarnation etc, would people treat life as precious as it is? Or would we still send solders off to fight for oil and bomb innocent civilians in the name of justice, or even commit suicide?
