I got this a few weeks ago as a fixer upper, even though it didn't really need fixing up. The changes have massively improved what was already a great guitar.

Compensated brass saddles: Don't really hear too much difference in brass over steel but the guitar is now intonated better than my strat. I'd recommend the ones with flat undersides, the round all around (???) ones won't let you get a low action.

Top hat switch tip: Purely Aesthetic. Although it is easier to flick away from the bridge without hitting the volume pot. So kinda mechanical.

Kluson vintage tuners: The best tuner both mechanically and visually in my opinion.

String tree: Had a spare lying around. It just looks better.

Strap button: Had to be changed because the original couldn't hold the strap and the strap block at the same time.

Tort pickguard: Not totally sold on this one. It does look better in the flesh.

Wiring harness: The weakest point of the guitar as it was were the pots. It was either 10 or 0 and nothing in between. I got this pre-made because it didn't cost that much more than buying the components and putting it together myself.

51 Nocasters: I liked the original bridge pickup but the neck had to go. It was down to these or the twisted teles. In the end I went for the Nocasters because I wanted the tele to sound like a tele, and I have no regrets. The neck pickup in particular is an enormous upgrade. Tons more clarity with overdrive and lots of character for cleans. The bridge has more bass than you might expect and is of course the star of the show. Twangy, well balanced across the strings and in relation to the neck and just killer with overdrive.

Are you me? I made almost the exact same set of mods to my burst Highway 1 Tele a few years ago and it made such a difference. I also had mine plekked so getting it back after having all that done felt like I made a HUGE upgrade. Those 51 nocaster pickups are so right to my ear.

Still a lot of life left in the frets but when I come to change them I might get it plekked. I can't say I've tried lots of different pickups but I can say that with the nocasters I have absolutely no desire to.

How did you go about contacting Fender to have the plekking done?

I had it done at a luthier here in Seattle.

Thanks. I'll probably have to go to Tampa or Orlando to find a trustworthy luthier. I doubt our local GC could handle it. They may be able to point me in the right direction though.
