If both of my parents turned out to be furries, it would certainly be weird but I would actually like it. Like say, I could put a SFW furry background on my phone an I wouldn't feel weird if my parents saw it then. Also, I could then easily go to a furry con in a city near me with out having to come up with some elaborate lie to where I was going.

Do the same with a NBC suit scares people especially if you dont wear a gas mask and ypu make a what the fuck face

I think it'd be scarier to find out that both of your parents are furries. Especially if you're already a furry yourself

I also found the community at 18, and have just started to consider myself a "furry" at 20. I'm definitely feeling the alienation of the adult community, I wish there were more 'mature' furs that I can have a real conversation with, rather than an adult with the mind of a teenager.  Im fine with  acting immature in suit/rp, its part of the character thing, but it would be awesome if some people could be a little more mature in the other times :D

I'm super lucky that I joined the fandom after turning 18. I can't imagine the pain of being a 14yo horny furry let alone how a 14yo immature mind would do about it.

I'm not a parent, but I heavily discourage this. Sure, watch Zootopia and Kemono Friends all you want, but this fandom is way too sexual to the point where there is no other reason for kids to join apart from the furry aesthetic. Also, let's just say that if Chris Hansen wanted to revive his show, he should join this fandom. 

If he or she eventually joins the fandom anyway, the most important thing to do is to teach the child basic Internet safety. Basic awareness goes a long way.

Otherwise, at least wait until he or she is 18 or above. The last thing I want is for the community to be forced to sanitize itself simply to cater to young children, possibility alienating much of the adult furry community (oh wait that's already happening nvm).

I'm childfree but if I did have kids I would definitely show Disney's Robin Hood and Zootopia, Maybe also Space Jam and some stuff like that. I'd probably also show them BNA when they got a bit older as it's decently wholesome. I'm not sure if I would actually directly say I was a furry or not. Stuff like that is also how a lot of people discovered they were furries anyway. Honestly, I would probably wait until they were about a teenager before I told them I was one as I don't think I would want to encourage them to be in the fandom when they are super young due to the amount of NSFW art in it that I would be afraid they would come across. 

Also it would depend what my partner thought of furries, if they didn't like them, it might be a mess if the kid actually became one prior to them being a teen. Also, I'd make sure not to make any furry stuff public on my social media as I wouldn't want their friends to possibly stumble across it and for them to then possibly start making fun of th

Yeah! While it’s true the majority of furries take part in the lewd activities in the fandom, is the fandom though mostly lewd shit? Absolutely not.

This!  Daughter is already into “animal people”.  Kinda how kids are brought up with media anyway.  Yes, as a parent, it’s your responsibility to curate as best as you can.  I also feel like it’s my responsibility to be the person they trust if they have questions or problems and we can navigate them together, safely.  Furry can be a ton of fun in SFW space.  It doesn’t have to toggle to lewd all the time!

Honestly id do it earlier to educate them on what parts to stay away from. I think it’s the parents job to do that.

I'm glad this post generated discussion. It's given me a lot of interesting and not so interesting answers. Some people seem very willing to introduce them to just the SFW parts.

I do see some of their points. That furry culture has significantly spilled over into popular culture. With shows like Zootopia for instance. Like a lot of things, I think there is somewhere that can be safe or wholesome.

But, as you'd probably agree, there is far too much NSFW spill over for the community at large to be considered a safe space for children. I'm hoping this has gotten some people to think about the current state of this community and its outward image.

Do you plan to introduce your children to the furry community? If you already have, what was their reaction? If you do not, why? If you do, how do you feel about the occasional fetish reference or spill over that sometimes occurs from the NSFW side of the community into the SFW side?

My husband and I are child free. Meaning, we do not want children, and likely never will. I sometimes think about the various things in life I enjoy because of not having or adopting children. And those things made me wonder, do furry parents hide this side of themselves from their children, or do they introduce their children to it? I don't mean the overtly sexual parts of the community either, even though far too often, even the tame parts of the community experience some Disney level adult insinuation or hidden references.
