Skirt dilemma! To over do or under do?

Other Question

Hi!

New member and loving the sub so far, you guys are such an inspiration!

Onto my question; I have a design and I want a flouncy skirt but I don’t know if what I’m planning will work?

I was wanting a double circle skirt but don’t have enough fabric and as it was a gift I don’t have a way of buying more. I DO however have enough to get three half circle skirts (I’d be half short of a double) so has anyone done this before and how’s it turned out?

I’m planning on adding some horsehair as well if that changes things and I’m ‘pear’ shape so if anyone wants to stop me; now is the time haha!

Thanks for the help!

it might also depend on your size. if you're pretty small, a simple full circle one is plenty, if you're on the bigger side 1 1/2 circle should be fine too.

also, if you want it really poofy (like 50's style poofy), get a petticoat.

Deffo more on the bigger side haha!

Wasn’t planning on going full 50’s on it, I’m layering some wedding tulle on top so it was to help keep the shape more than anything.

You could make a miniature version of each first to see how they would look. I think either your idea or just a circle skirt could work fine here, it really depends on your preference.

Normally it’s what I would have done but I’m using every last millimetre to get the three halves out and I just don’t have anything in my stash that’s similar weight; it’s sort of a light cotton twill from what I can tell.

Might just have to say balls to the wall and go for it haha

I say go for it then!

1 1/2 circle in a light twill + horsehair will be plenty flouncy!

This site has a good comparison of 1 vs 2, so imagine something in the middle - I'd say 1 1/2 will look great.

That’s a great resource thank you!

And thanks for the boost; think imma just do it and worry about finessing later haha

Angela Clayton did a very poofy skirt made of a few circle skirts (I forget the number). She also added horsehair braid to hers, turned out very cute.

I’ll give her a google and see what I can find! Always great to see different ways of making things
