The Sandman- Audible

Just an appreciation post for The Sandman Audible adaptation. This is so good. I have perpetual goosebumps, and it’s still so apt to the original source and still so exciting.

Absolutely fantasic! loved it!

I read the comic a few times over the years and I really loved this version.

Neil Gaimans writing always works great when read to like a fairytale, and the cast is fantastic too!

Can't wait for part 2

He's probably my favorite author, his books work even better as audiobook, they just have that old magic fairy tale feeling

I just finished it aswell and it is good.

My one gripe is that the audio doesn't seem well tuned for listening on mobile. The wild swings in volume makes parts hard to listen to.

What phone are you using? It seems to be working well on my iPhone till now

Using the audible android app, the sound is working fine, but the volume levels of the sound effects are overpowering the narration at times, something that is more noticeable on mobile.

weird i wonder if other people have had the same problem, in which case they should definitely address it

This is something that I've had problems with in the past. I've solved it with new earphones, but possibly tweaking the EQ would help as well. If you have a system that boosts the bass then the mid-tones, typically where voices sit, can be overwhelmed.

This is my point about mobile being an issue, you rarely have HQ listening devices on mobile so an audiocast that is widely used on mobile devices should take this into account.

Listened to it without ever reading the comic and I loved it! Really high quality production with the sound effects and different voice actors. It’s more of a radio play than an audiobook.

Just ordered the first omnibus because I want to read it now with the visuals!

Does this work for someone who hasn’t read the source material? I love Gaiman, but I’m not a huge graphic novel person.

6
thenewcandideOP•

Yes! reading the source material is definitely not a prerequisite. And for all intents and purposes, it’s nothing like any graphic novel

I’ve heard only positive things, and it’s been on my list for years...just haven’t gotten around yet! Excited for the audiobook though!

Never read it but listen to the audible version, was brilliant imo. Don't feel like I was missing anything/it translated very well into the audio format.

Looked forward to listening, bought with a credit, remembered reading “that scene” in the Diner, realise I need to be in the right headspace to listen. Bugger.

I don't remember the one you're referring to, but the scene with Death and the infant screwed me up into a tiny sobbing ball.

It's a terribly moving story.

Is it still good if I know nothing about the source material and I'm not into superheroes? I am a Gaiman fan.

Yes, but if you are a Gaiman fan I would highly recommend getting your hands on the comics.

Thanks.

Maybe? The descriptions are okay, but I kinda think you'd want to read the graphic novel to get a clearer idea of everything imo. There's also not much in the ways of superheroes. Morpheus isnt really a punchy guy, and the story is more about his personal growth. If you like gaiman it would be right up your alley

Thank you.

Just started listening last night and am loving it. I've never heard an audiobook like this, the format, music and sound effects somehow all work so well together.

the bit where Dream and Death are walking together in the start gave me literal chills

Isn't Sandman a comic book? How does that work on audible?

Gaiman narrates it explaining the scene as needed, additionally there is a lot of added sound effects which paint the scene very well. Can't compare it to the comic but the audio version imo worked perfectly

I really enjoyed it, but man were some sections slightly awkward to listen to out loud. I often listen while driving, and there were a few times I felt the need to turn the volume down as to not have... odd sounds coming from my car. The Dr Destiny and serial killer sections were especially cringe inducing.

oh I totally get where you’re coming from

Just started listening! So far so good!

I love the performance.

I enjoyed the sound effects.

Gaiman’s writing and narration is spot on and as amazing as always.

My only gripe is the “episodic” nature of the chapters breaks the spell of the narration.

thenewcandideOP•

Yes! I agree it’s a little irksome

I'm a fan of Neil Gaiman so I will give this another try because it didn't really work for me on the first attempt. I am a really big fan of audiobooks, but this is different, this is acted not narrated, and it does make a difference when you are used to narrators.

I really hated the Locke & Key audible thing. Just thought it was difficult to follow. Is the Sandman similar?

i don’t think so! It seems pretty nice
