Minnesota Mechanics

Hello S10,

For context I have a '93 S10 4.3L 4x4 with a 5 speed manual with just over 90,000 miles. I am wondering if anyone has a recommended mechanic in the Minneapolis/St Paul, MN area. I don't have a regular mechanic that I go to but would like to find a small "family" shop that would actually get to know me and my vehicle.

If you are still reading this, I am having a little bit of trouble with the 4x4 in my truck. Several days ago I brifly used it in 4low to pull a large tree branch. When I moved the lever back in to 2High the "4x4" light stayed on though I could tell that the truck was driving like it had gone back in to 2wd mode.

I reaserched online and found that the vacuum switch(located on the top of the transfer case) being stuck open is the likley culprit. I replaced that switch and just drove around the block and the 4x4 light went off almost immediatly. I thought I was good.

So, to test everything I moved the lever back to the 4x4 position and found that the light did not come on and the truck did not go in to 4x4 mode. Any ideas are welcome and thanks in advance.

So I think since it's a lever style 4x4 the only other thing that could be wrong is the actuator under the battery either that or the vacuum lines that run from the TC to that actuator but there is really nothing else I don't think.

I'll look in to that. I do recall seeing someone mentioning that during my research.

Yea it is right there in the way of the bolts for the booster, there is a good chance it just hanging down there

As far as the mechanic portion goes, I recommend Tommy’s Garage in Hopkins. Tommy is my really good friends brother. His history is with Audi dealership maintenance, but he’s a solid mechanic with years and years of experience. He grew up in MN, and as far as you can trust a random internet stranger, he’s a good dude.

I'll definitely look in to Tommy. Thanks for the tip.

If it makes you feel better, my 4x4 selector lights are never right, but after a few rotations it always ends up where I told it to go.

Fair enough. I wouldn't really mind the light not going on. Not going to to 4x4 is a problem though.
