I remember learning this ages ago, but then someone debunked it by saying Sasha says a different word that sounds nothing like Niccolo. Though maybe they were wrong? I hope so, cause it's brilliant if so.

I've been thinking of the same thing for a while... But wont it mean niccolo's name be translated to meat without the -lo in eldian as well? Part of his name is a category of food. Nicco Sasha was a perfect ship.

Niccolo is a real Italian name. Google says it means something like "conqueror of the people" or something like that. It's an unfortunate coincidence lol.
Also, I assume Eldian isn't supposed to be Japanese? The characters' names are all foreign and written in katakana (I think?). Marley is based upon Italy and apparently they speak the same language (Sasha's dad has a "South Marleyan accent" according to Gabi). And Hizuru already exists as a Japanese stand-in.

Though another problem arises: was the word niku written in kanji?
Perhaps it could be ambiguous in the anime, though. The VA could be directed to sound like she's trying to say Niccolo but dies before saying it. Like, "Nicco..." which could sound like niku. I'm afraid it probably wasn't intended by Yams, and that's a shame cause it's such a perfect opportunity to make a morbidly humorous line hold so much more weight.

I don't think Sasha was trying to say Niccolo's name there. Isayama straight up use the kanji for meat and not "Niku" with katakana.

Nah she was only a fan favourite. Issayma wanted to kill her in the arc where she saves kaya but his editor felt sad and kept her. I wish she died there.
