Audio completely stops when frames drop in lr-mupen64plus-next (retropie on raspberry pi 4)

Im using a raspberry pi 4 with 4GB of ram with retropie, and games in general work fine. However, there is an issue when emulating n64 games with lr-mupen64plus-next where audio will completely stop if frames drop (it doesnt matter if its just 1 frame drop or whatever, audio will completely stop). This is annoying because sometimes i cant even notice the lag, but audio will still go off.

I've followed the instructions in this post https://www.reddit.com/r/RetroPie/comments/86snpv/a_guide_to_improve_n64_audio/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share , so when game lags, audio will stutter instead of going completely off. However, this doesn't work with lr-mupen64plus-next, but only with mupen64 emulators. I've tried playing in those but they give worse performance, even if they fix the audio issues (game and audio will lag at places that lr-mupen64plus-next emulates just fine).

So my question is, how can i make audio stutter instead of going completely off in lr-mupen64plus-next?
