PSA Buying Kakao Cash

Info

I'm not sure if this is breaking any forum rules here, I'm genuinely trying to forewarn people and not cause drama.

TL;DR Make sure you use a payment method that is registered under your name and that is the same name on your account.

I just experienced something both frustrating and avoidable.

Personally, I don't own a credit card and I don't like using my debt card online incase someone gets ahold of the information. My family on the other hand does have credit cards. So I used one with permission, we live in the same house. We have the same last name.

Apparently that flagged my account through paymentwall as a possible fraudulent attempt. I've spent the past four days trading emails with their customer service trying to resolve this issue. Unfortunately it could not be resolved. The reason is, their only policy for verification is that you send pictures of your government ID. Which I am not willing to share for many reasons. I'm sure other people have shared this information and that's fine. It's not for me.

So my account will forever be blocked from making purchase attempts. They will not allow me to use any other payment attempt. So I can't even use a card registered under my own name or any other method.

It just feels like a really bad experience and if anyone else has an issue sharing personal information like that. This message is for you.

Thanks for reading.

Edit: It's quite disturbing how many hostile and toxic people are in this community. This post is to spread awareness for people who may fall into this same problem. Not sure why people find the need to insult and attack others for their opinions.

My bank would not find this situation a fraud.

Second Edit: https://imgur.com/a/BoefJKE This is their request after sharing my story and asking for my payment options unblocked so I could simply use a different payment method.

Just give them your info you boomer

This. I had to do it to get my 2 step removed when I came back to the game.

As someone who has second hand experience to identity theft. There are things I won't give online to protect myself and my family.

-7
Gumdrawps•

The fact that you think that information isnt already out there given that credit bureaus and government entities are incapable of protecting it in the first place is laughable, however kudos to you for trying to be safe at least.

5
aBitToTheLeftOP•

That's fine, that's under the responsibility of those that indefinitely NEED that information.

You do not need a government ID to verify a simple online transaction. There are many other ways to determine that. Not to mention the last name on the card is the same. If it's your policy to reject transactions unless names are identical, perfect. Let that be known, block the transaction, and allow people to use another method of payment.

That isn't the case here. I am permanently blocked until I give up my personal information.

-8
MLG_PenguinLahn•

You got rekt because you didn't use a card in your own name, and when asked to rectify the situation you didn't. Why is this such a big issue in your eyes? You say you've seen identity theft, yet you have a problem with a system that's trying to help prevent it.

12
okdkdk•

PA has every right to ask for your ID to prevent fradulent activity just as much as youre declining to give youre your govt ID. In this situation youre the one that is causing your own trouble, it makes perfect sense for them to ask ro verify the identity of the payment because if identity doesnt match, the person can come back later saying someone used my card without my authorization and have bank retract the payment

5

You used someone else's credit card you dumb fuck. What did you expect? They are trying to prevent people stealing other people's credit cards. You know, the thing you are so scared about? As the other guy said, you have a problem with system made to prevent the very thing you are so scared of. If that doesn't show you your absolute borderline idiocy, I don't know what can. Your delusion is beautiful.

They aren't verifying "simple online transaction", they are verifying YOU because YOU used SOMEONE ELSE'S credit card. How is that "simple online transaction" to you?

4
Revaq_•

Second hand isn't first hand. So why are you scared?

You're sending literally just your picture, nothing else

You're not important, no one's going to ruin your family cause you bought bdo pearls

0†

And you think people knowing your name and address will result in fucking identity theft? You do realize you can cover info needed for actual identity theft. You basically only need to provide them with fucking Facebook profile info like photo, city and name. But you probably have 10x more info on your facebook page.

That's what happens when actual morons are scared of identity theft but have absolutely no knowledge about anything. It's like being scared of thieves and buying alloy-enforced door with 15 cm plate of gold and 2 machine guns at the ready while leaving all 10 windows of your house wide open screaming "I will not open my door because I'm so smart; I read 10 boomer articles made to prevent grandmas from giving their personal data and buying gift cards to fucking hindu fake Microsoft/advertisement scams"

-2
aBitToTheLeftOP•

Actually it's more information required than just that.

I don't use social media, and people don't put their direct personal information including address ect on social media.

Thanks for your opinion.

4
SwagginsYolo420•

Why do you assume a security conscious person would do something reckless like have a Facebook page? In the future everyone will be looking back on this era of freely handing out personal information as absolute insanity.

And if somebody is smart enough not to have a Facebook page they aren't likely reading stupid "boomer grandma" articles on Facebook in the first place.

I wouldn't have an issue verifying my identity with Kakao for purchases, however I can understand there could be reasonable reasons why somebody would choose not to depending on their circumstances.

2

"you send pictures of your government ID. Which I am not willing to share for many reasons."

So you input all the fucking data of someone else's credit card but don't want to send them a photo of your ID that can be obstructed to cover really sensitive data, since they only need your name and address for confirmation, not fucking SSN or anything that can be used.

And then you come to reddit to warn people because you committed a fraud and REFUSED TO PROVE YOU DIDN'T.

Holy fuck people are dumb.

12
SnowyCrowShai•

Yeah needed to send blizzard pic of my driving licence once for account recovery, just blacked out end of SSN and it was all fine. Not like they have everything else already from previous purchaces.

1
aBitToTheLeftOP•

You don't seem like a very intelligent person yourself.

They actually require a lot more information than just your name and address. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. I can share a picture of the e-mail sharing what they require.

Using my family's credit card isn't fraud. Most companies and even banks allow you to use credit cards without your name on them as long as you're on the account.

Grow up.

-8
BoostedSaltboy•

His point still stands. You are using your families credit card, entered that data into their system because you dont want to use your own? If they can steal your debit card information, they very well can steal the credit card information ...
If your family is fine with it, okay I guess. Still, you are risking your families information because you are scares that yours is taken...

5
aBitToTheLeftOP•

There is a difference between a debt card and a credit card. Debt card takes money directly from your account. A credit card is technically "fake money" until your credit card bill is payed. No actual money changes hands. Which means if someone steals your credit card information. When you dispute it with the bank, they freeze everything and investigate. Which is a lot easier to deal with and you aren't at a loss of money.

-1
krongdong69•

that's probably one of the only benefits of playing on steam, no worries about payments or having to type in my password every time I log in.

11
aBitToTheLeftOP•

Yeah that's what I have learned, unfortunately when I looked into it. I can't convert my account to a steam account since I've been playing from launch and have an OG account from their website.

6
dinorsaurSr•

your own fault lol

7
aBitToTheLeftOP•

Yeap sure was, but there isn't anything I can do about it now without compromising my beliefs.

-4
vanillacokesucks•

maybe don't have stupid beliefs lmao all your personal info is already in the hands of people who shouldn't have it. your attempts at "protecting" yourself failed the second you bought a smart phone, an amazon alexa, google home, even typing your fucking name into the bdo account sign up process already gave them the information your beliefs apparently won't let you give them. you also already gave them the information of the card holder when you used the card. you're an actual idiot.

7
SwagginsYolo420•

Why do some folks always assume people that are privacy conscious are running around willy-nilly using stuff like Amazon Alexa or Facebook or whatever in the first place? They would probably be the least likely to.

If somebody is taking steps to minimize their data footprint, chances are they are applying that across the board to some reasonable degree, and picking and choosing which companies they want to risk sharing data with.

In the future everyone will be looking back on this era of freely handing out personal information as absolute insanity.

4
vanillacokesucks•

For a person who's so scared of identity theft, OP willingly gave SOMEONE ELSES card info to BDO. A person so worried about minimizing their data footprint, chose to instead of risking their own identity, risked their family members. BDO in the last 4 years has had 2 data breaches. The fuck makes a security conscious person think giving them their family members card info is a good idea?

Assuming someone actually broke in and decrypted BDOs personal info files a lot more harm will be done to a person if their credit card info is obtained vs a picture of their drivers license. You can't do shit with a low res picture of an ID.

OP is a fucking moron who contradicts his own beliefs without even realizing it.

3
aBitToTheLeftOP•

I don't know who hurt you, but I'm sorry for you. Why you feel so hostile toward people for no reason? The world may never know.

All of those things you've mentioned doesn't give companies access to your government ID. I'm not sure if you're old enough to have one of those, but if you look at it, it has specific information pertaining to your ID. Along with a photo of your person. Someone who has collected a picture of your government ID and other personal information about you can do significant damage to your identity. Unlike many people, I value my person and what I've gained in life. I'm not willing to risk that for simple online transactions I don't really need.

If you’re account gets hacked then what? How do they know if it’s really you? WoW does this also and it’s a good way to prevent people stealing accounts and such, and another reason why they do it is because people can easily steal a credit card these days and use it. They don’t want people charging back the money, because it hurts them. Anyways good luck trying to resolve this with them.

Dude you're not important, no one is going to steal your gov Id from fucking PA.

7
CheckmXte101•

Same happened to me just show your id and verify who you are. Think of it the opposite way. Imagine if they didnt have this process. Its safe, dont worry. Or dont, and be forever blocked from purchases i guess

5
shamokin_area:lahn: Lahn•

All I'm seeing here is a problem that has an easy solution: Show them your ID. Name one person that had their personal info leaked by anyone related to BDO. All you have to do is show them your ID and they make sure it matches your card. You can even whip your card pic into ms paint and black out your face / address to lower the chance of getting your info stolen (which won't happen either way)

4†
aBitToTheLeftOP•

They actually require to see that information including your photo. I've asked. I don't know how many people have had an issue with this, I don't know everyone who has or still plays BDO. Quite frankly that's irrelevant. I don't know if anything on my end is compromised, or what they're going to do with that information. I don't know the company, and I don't know who will be handling my information. The idea is to limit exposure and control who has that very personal information.

The purpose of sharing this experience is because people should be aware of what happens in this scenario. To make sure you don't make the mistake that I did. Unfortunately for me and for kakao, I will not willingly give my government ID over the internet. This is a warning for others who may share the same opinion as me.

Yeah, no shit, you aren't spreading awareness here. You are the village idiot. "Don't steal your family's credit card to buy Pearls" is the thing people should take away from this.

0
aBitToTheLeftOP•

You must not be very fluent in English. Not quite sure where I said I stole someone's credit card. You are brilliant my friend.

1
Bowtie16bit•

I would venture you are too attached to the false premise that anything can be truly secured, and are afraid of change, yet it is inevitable you will die and futile to try to preserve yourself indefinitely. In any attempt to do so, you are allowing fear to rule over you and therefore run the even greater risk of missing out on the true opportunities this short life offers you before it all ends meaninglessly in nothingness anyway...

Actually, since life is absurd and there is nothing after death and no eternal consequences anyway, I suppose it doesn't matter that you strive so much to keep your personal information private, since we'll all end up in the same nothingness.

Having arrived to that conclusion, I say thank you for posting your warning; I will carry that information with me and use it to ensure I don't have any complications in my future purchases.

2
Evan_Underscore•

That's ugly. I feel with you. Personally I wouldn't even give my actual name - I just don't like my gaming persona associated with it.

I even had some concerns trying an asian mmo, but I thought South-Koreans are among the coolest bunch of the region.

Lucky for me I got the game on a Steam giveaway, and I use PayPal wherever I can.

Excel and forums? You must be old too. Guess you never heard about big data or algorithms before.

It's not that I'm worried about anything in particular. It just takes a so little effort to separate my digital identity from the irl one for most onlookers, that I might as well just do it.

I also don't do 'massive' payments. If things go wrong, I had a perfectly agreeable loss. Never had anything like that happen to me though. For me it's well worth it to make sure my bosses don't know what I'm playing and such.

I see that. It's a habit, not a worry.

Are you suggesting there are people who don't do illegal-stuff? I thought they just cover it better. :P

1
Dasov7•

It's just standard procedure in compliance and one required due to Anti Money Laundering regulations to my knowledge of working in compliance. So you can complain of financial regulations more than Kakao. That bloody governments /s

Think about this from their perspective. They've got a payment from person A to account of person B. Would you take their word they are who they are over an email?

If it was possible I can call and say I'm you and I've got my email hacked and I REALLY need to change my email and 2FA on the account. And you can trust me, I'm the person who owns the account. Easier and faster money than grinding ;) Thankfully it's impossible.

2
aBitToTheLeftOP•

I have never been asked for my government ID when resolving fraudulent activity. There are many other ways to corroborate information and connect the dots without invading someone's privacy. Sure there are some instances where an ID is an absolute. But that should not be the singular and ONLY demand for resolution.

Not to mention the fact that the last names on the account and card are the same. That simple information alone should be enough to draw the conclusion that fraud is not happening here. You can simply revoke the transaction due to this issue and request a different payment method.

1
Dasov7•

I've been multiple times. Just the thing on the internet. One time my bank blocked me as they weren't sure if it was me using my card so they blocked my account for the weekend and cancelled my card on their own.

I get it's annoying but it's what we need to deal with because of creativity of people how want our stuff, sadly

I honestly don’t understand all of the immediate hate you got for this post? Yeah it would have been easier to just send the info they wanted and blocked out everything else but at the same time you are also human and have your concerns about other human mistakes (ex : somehow all the right events taking place and you getting your info stolen).

I mean, truthfully this post gave me the knowledge to not use a family members card or more steps will need to be taken to make sure that the process for pearls go through and heck if I was younger and didn’t own a card this post would have saved me a whole argument with my parents on why I need a picture of their drivers license so I could send it to some company that needs it because they let me use their card to buy something on a game I play constantly.

At the end of the day I feel like the post succeeded at making those who are possibly new aware that there will be extra steps needed in the case that they use a family members / relatives card. So thanks and honestly if this were to happen again in the future I’d say if your worried about sending personal info to a company and can get in contact with a actual human from the support system maybe ask them which parts of your ID need to be shown and if you can block out the rest due to personal concerns and if they want too much in your opinion at that point then make decision to send it or not.

1
RideBanshee:darkknight: 293/335 deleter•

Why not just send them your ID with the actual ID # blacked out. If all they need is to see the ID with your photo, then as long as you black out the actual numbers you have absolutely nothing to lose. You could post your ID with picture and name here on reddit and as long as the other info is blacked out you're not at any risk.

0
aBitToTheLeftOP•

Because I'm not willing to take the risk of having a picture of my government ID out there for a simple online transaction. One that shouldn't be flagged as potential fraud in the first place.

If they didn't have some crazy policy, they could have rejected my transaction and said use a different one. In which I would have used another.

But to block any transactions period and then REQUIRE a government ID is sketchy and I won't under any circumstances do that.

I don't need to give my money to kakao that badly.

But again, this post is to notify people of what could happen if you make the wrong choice like I did.

0

Everyone has the same policy. Your bank, Paypal, anything that deals with money. You probably have cards linked with online transactions with no issues yet are scared of showing your name to company that processes payments for the biggest online leviathans out there. If they ever leaked even one customer's data they would be sued, fined, done and gone. And somehow they've been in this business long enough to gain trust of big clients. Clients bigger than some 80 IQ neckbeard that thinks he's protecting his family by using their credit card info to buy Pearls in a video game.

3
aBitToTheLeftOP•

This is hilarious, you're so dense it's a bit concerning. "showing your name to company". Yeah dude, that's exactly it! I must not share my name with anyone or they will steal my identity!

The amazing words of a shill.

Grow up.

0
RideBanshee:darkknight: 293/335 deleter•

I mean, I get that their process for fraud is weird, but there's literally no difference between having your ID out there with all the info blacked out and your Facebook photos...
