The four things I remember most from Expo 86:

  1. The very big flag pole.
  2. The drive to get there and back from L.A. — we took a wrong turn in southern Washington and ended up most of the way to Idaho before I (driving) commented, “Hey John, are we supposed to be headed east?” “No, I don’t think so, what makes you think we’re headed east?” “Well, it’s afternoon and our shadow is pointed straight ahead of us.” Ended up driving the rest of the way to where we could cross into Oregon, then I was an idiot in a car getting us to Crater Lake — going so fast I passed three semis at once.
  3. I saw someone in a a t-shirt that I wanted so bad: on the front “I’m a close, personal friend of Ferris Bueller.” On the back “Someday I may even meet him.”
  4. When we went to “Vancouver’s most notorious gay bar” with the friends we were staying with. Sign in the door said in big letters:

WARNING: this is a GAY bar for GAY people. If you have a problem with that, DON’T COME IN.

I went to see it when I was at Expo 86. You basically went through a dark room where there were dramatic videos of our state playing all around you. Adolescent me gave it two thumbs up, but it would seem kind of basic and primitive today.

What I remember the most though was the USSR exhibit. They had these proto-digital type displays that you used to see in train stations, but they had them everywhere and they were making big displays out of them, yet only half of them or so were working. But they were also exhibiting their prowess in the space race, with cosmonaut stuff all over the place.

That's so cool! I still have a mini-mug from the expo that says EXPO 86 Vancouver, Canada.
