Bixby Routines update: Auto switch between FHD @120hz & WQHD @60Hz on per app basis

Link is to the XDA forum post. There was an ADB and app workaround but now a new update for Bixby Routines is available that supports motion smoothness changes as well.

Go into Settings > Advanced Settings > Bixby Routines > Settings > about to get the update.

Still requires force stopping the youtube app to get it to recognize the resolution change and enable 1440p, which makes it less than useful still. I do appreciate being able to control the refresh & screen together now rather than just the resolution alone, but until it can actually force close youtube so it will actually recognize that the resolution changed to QHD, it's not really that useful.

It also doesn't actually revert to 120Hz, but it always reverts to standard, even if I'm on adaptive before it changes, so it doesn't even seem to be fully working yet.

That's interesting, perhaps the standard youtube app behaves differently. With Vanced it appears to open immediately into 1440p. Once closed my home screen flashes and goes back to my previous setting which is 1080p adaptive.

Yeah with the standard youtube it changes the screen resolution, but the youtube app doesn't acknowledge the change and still maxes out at 1080p unless I force close it. Then it will acknowledge QHD, until the phone is rebooted or youtube gets pushed from RAM, then it requires repeating.

Also it messes up good lock homescreen changes, always forcing my dock count back to 5, just deleting the other shortcuts when the resolution changes.

And it flashes and resets the resolution, but it's not changing the refresh back to adaptive.

Have you tried turning the screen off (clicking the side button once) then on again? I have this bixby routine and this is what I do to get the 1440p option to appear

Still same result. Only if I force stop it.

Did you test it? What aps are you using to switch to what resolution/ refresh rate? Suggestions for best battery life using this?

For me I'm only really using it for Youtube Vanced at the moment where I want WQHD. When I exit the app it returns to FHD@120hz for everything else.

I do know that FHD@120hz is more taxing on the battery than WQHD but I haven't done much testing. I'm pretty happy with the battery life I've been getting so far.

Can you post your routines to do that? When I leave youtube its not going back to fhd@120hz

TouchofRedOP•

Vanced Routine It's really basic. Not sure why it wouldn't switch back for you.

Your image helped..I wasn't picking the one you were in the image..I was just using the one that just had screen resolution.

Now my issue is YouTube isn't giving the 1440 option when I look at 4k videos..

Maybe add it to a battery saver routine. Triggered by a certain battery percentage. I'm just thinking it off going others well join in.

The transition is causing some apps to close and then they fail to reopen. Nice option though. I'm setting all my photo editing apps to use this if they work properly with it.

I've always kept Bixby off in the past. I'm considering finally trying it this time. But it seems like a lot since I'm clueless.

It's pretty easy to get going. When you add a routine you first select a condition. In my case I chose the App opened Event. From there select the app(s) you want the changes applied to.

Select Next and we'll need to add the Then portion: This is where you will select the display changes you want to adjust for the apps we selected earlier. Motion smoothness and screen resolution is where you will set your preferences. Select Done and that's it.

Thanks! Does it takeover the entire phone though? Bixby I mean. Is it intertwined with the camera and whatever else? I had someone recently tell me that it's finally to the point where it's well worth it. I'm just so used to Google. But I've been slowly moving over to Samsung.

Not that I've noticed. Unless you activate Bixby vision or something in the camera. Bixby Routines seems to be a separate function from the rest of the Bixby voice assistant.

Thanks again

Bixby routines is separate from bixby. You can use routines without ever actually touching bixby. It's great.

I don't see an available update.

If it didn't trigger through the routines app in Settings > About you can try checking the galaxy store for updates and that might trigger it.

It works but YouTube is not showing the 1440p resolution option for 4k videos.. it still defaults to max resolution 1080p. Also phone lags after I close the YouTube.. I don't understand this struggle..can't they just give 120Hz at WQHD ..

Just added an exception for youtube, thanks for the heads up!

The Standard 1440p works flawlessly even on Vanced Youtube , just don't forget to turn off the VP9 codec that has been a problem on the latest update.

1
Athosrun•

Youtube us displaying 1440p for you? How do you turn off the codec?

1
Gggggas•

Open Youtube click on your profile picture at the top right corner then go to Settings , Vanced settings and Codec Override so you can turn it off in case it's on.

Athosrun•

Thanks for the reply, this is through the vanced app not YouTube i take it?

Randomly decides when it does and doesn't revert back to 120hz.
