Belair Auto Insurance increase after COVID relief (ON)

Insurance

My renewal was during April and it went up by $15. Annoying but whatever, I'll test the market next year.

Then COVID happened and they reduced the monthly payments for 3-4 months since most people would presumably use their car less including me.

That ends next month so fine looks like I'll be going back to the old payments but of course they decide to hike it up an extra $20/month starting next month.

I've already emailed them about this and awaiting a reply but just wanted to see if any of you guys had something similar or can shed some light on this.

Mine actually ended 3 days ago. So I called them yesterday to change my usage and the premiums barely went down (the covid relief changes were HUGE!)...

My premiums were: $2800 ish pre-Covid; $1900 ish COVID relief premium; $2600 ish now, after the relief program and changing my usage :(

I asked the insurance guy and he said “The Covid relief program wasn’t just about the usage, we were also giving a discount, so that’s why your insurance didn’t go down that much when you changed your usage”

Imo, it’s kinda bull lol

I'm with Allstate in AB and during COVID I've received 2 covid rebate cheques from them for about $43 each. Yesterday I received my renewal letter as our policy for 2 vehicles renews in October and our yearly rate went up $120. What's the point in sending out rebates only to increase rates the next year.

This happened to me as well for my renewal. I called and chatted with them and asked them to explain how my insurance is increasing x amount when the value of the vehicle is decreasing. They came back and now my payment is lower then it was pre-covid. Also, if the total km's you are driving this year is lower then you are insured for, you can change that and your rate will also decrease. At least it did for me.

Call first and politely get them to explain it to you. Continue to politely ask why until you get the answer you are looking for. If this doesn't work then shop around for insurance and see if they will beat the best price you find. I am not sure what a MPP can do when this is an issue between an individual and an insurance company about the price of renewal.

Ask them to break it down for you, and ask for your monthly payment schedule. Your premium can't increase mid-term. Ask for everything in annual amounts so that you can compare fairly, as monthly payments can have funky math.

I wouldn't go to your MPP yet, that's a bit of a hasty move. It's likely a system glitch. The rate books used change all the time based on the filings that have been approved by the regulator. It's likely a new filing went through since your policy renewed increasing the pricing.

You should not be subject to the new rate book but the system may have made an error when removing the COVID credit (Or Intact being a shady company did it on purpose hoping you wouldn't notice). Either way call them they should fix it without giving you a hassle.

I'm in the same boat, but in NS. Policy is up for renewal next month, but the insurance provider has already jacked my rates by $25/mth for an unknown (at this time) reason. I didn't even get any rebates for COVID relief. When I asked about it, the difference was $5/mth, so I told my broker not to bother.

I have an email into my broker now to ask about the increase, but it's been 2 days and no answer so far.

My Bel-air policy renewed in Sept and went down $15/month.

I was also in an accident, though found to be 100% not at fault, and despite this they didn't go up.

You should always compare annual premium before and after covid changes. Different companies rate differently based on their business strategy, rates may vary between provinces based on actuarial science. When you compare monthly, the difference in premium is usually based on pro rata premium change spread over payments left in the term compared to full 12 payments at the beginning of the term.
