Routine Help

If you're new to SkincareAddiction: welcome!

This thread is the best place to start if you have questions about skincare products, your routine, and your skin. Our community is knowledgeable, and we want to help you have the best skin of your life!

#Do you have a question?

###Step 1: Read our resources

Be sure to check out our FAQ and Wiki! There are a lot of topics covered in those links, but some of the most popular guides include:

Or search the sub using this awesome website. You might find a solution to your problem there!

If you can't find an answer, or you have additional questions after reading, please move on to step 2!

###Step 2: Ask for help

To give you the best advice possible, our users need relevant information about your skin and skincare. With your request for help please include:

  • The issue(s) you need help with. It's helpful to put your questions at the top of your comment (especially if it's a long one)!

  • Skin type. It's OK to be subjective, how do you feel your skin is? Oily, dry? If you need help clarifying, check out this guide on skin types

  • Current routine with the full names of your products (try to separate it in to Morning, Evening, and Occasionally used)

  • How long you have been using your current routine, or product in question

  • Anything new you’ve introduced or started doing that might change the condition of your skin

  • Your location so we can recommend products/services available to you

Thanks for taking the time to include your information!

#Would you like to give advice?

Firstly, thank you so much for helping out our community - without your knowledge and time ScA would not be the same!

Some things we'd ask for you to keep in mind: please don't just downvote someone's opinion or response because you disagree.

If you can, please take the time to tell them why you think their advice may be incorrect or harmful. It's better for people to understand why something is a poor choice, instead of just being told that it is one!

Once a year, we have a big thank you post for everyone who has helped out in the DHT where we give out nifty flairs & gold to exceptionally informative and kind users. Check out our list of ScA Helpers and our most recent thank you post!

Whether it be in-depth responses that deserve to be their own guides, thoughtful product recommendations, or simply pointing someone in the right direction, we appreciate all the time and effort you've made to help others!

Does having a weak immune system increase the chance of getting acne? I was seem to get the worst flares after being sick.

Hi! I'm gonna start by saying my age: 18. I've never had obvious dark circles under my eyes and my skin has always worked in my favour, I have pretty clear skin, only some pimples once in a while. Lately, I have noticed 3 little lines under each of my eye, they look like full on wrinkles. My skin is dry and I use an aloe moisturiser everyday and cleanse with a gentle cleanser, that's it. What can I do for those little lines? I would argue that I get enough sleep and drink plenty of water as well as eating mostly healthy. I've become concerned about the little lines, thinking I'm starting to get wrinkles, what can I do?

alternatives to cotton pads?

i have TO glycolic acid toner which i use in the PM but i feel it's too much cotton pad waste. Some toners can be directly put on the hand and dabbed on the face, can I do that too with TO GA? otherwise, what are some reusable cotton pad alternatives? TIA

2
lotteoddities•

I pour the glycolic acid in my hands, and pat it into my skin. But you can also get reusable cotton pads on Amazon.

Yes, that skin is now damaged. So just avoid it when you put product on. You want to allow that spot to heal, free from product. Especially actives.

trip251•

Thank you! So if I leave a patch on the skin to protect it and then applied the product around it, would it be alright?

2
lotteoddities•

Like a pimple patch? Absolutely. Wonderful way to keep it clean and protected.

I'm looking for a good Korean cleanser for my combination skin.

Right now my routine is cleansing with the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Cleanser, TO's Lactic Acid 10% + HA and Niacinimide 10% + Zinc 1% then using the CeraVe moisturizing lotion and benzoyl peroxide for my acne. I've just started this new routine 2 weeks ago.

I feel the La Roche Posay cleanser doesn't work well for me so I was thinking about trying a Korean cleanser, I've been looking at the COSRX Salicylic Acid, COSRX Good Morning, and the Etude House Soonjung Whip Cleanser but I'm not sure which one is the best for me or maybe you have a different recommendation

2
musicist10•

I would rule out the COSRX SA cleanser, I’ve heard the pH is too high to properly exfoliate. The Good Morning cleanser is better suited to oily/combo skin since many people have said it to be drying. I would go with the Etude House one, it’s quite gentle and cleanses nicely.

I recently bought some new skin care items, and I'm not sure of the order I should be using them.

Glycolic acid and rose petal toner (not sure the strength) Vitamin E and ferulic acid serum Vitamin C and Magnesium serum Hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B5 serum Retinol and peptides serum Loreal Paris Hydra-total 5 moisturizer with LHA in it

I have combination skin, with dryness on my cheeks and oilyness on my chin. I'm also having a lot of breakouts on my chin, I think from stress, hormones, and wearing a mask all day at work. I'd like to even out my skin tone and texture, as well as stop all these breakouts. I also have a couple of closed comodones on my forehead.

I'm thinking I'll use the glycolic acid toner and retinol serum on alternating nights, and the Vit C, E and ferulic acid, and Hyaluronic acid serums in the mornings, but the thing I'm not sure about is the moisturizer with LHA in it, because I know its a BHA and I want to use it both at night and in the morning after my routines.

Is there any issue with the way I plan on using these items? Anything I can use as well? I have a 45spf sunscreen that I'll put on in the morning under some makeup.

What should I do if a small section of my skin became red and irritated after the Ordinary Peel? The skin closer to my eye (but not directly under it) began to sting when I put on the solution, so I used a small wet cloth to remove that section.

When I took it off (a couple minutes after I put it on) it was red and hurt when I moved the skin. I iced the skin and put on a 98% aloe vera gel on it. It’s been a couple of hours and it’s still red and sensitive (doesn’t hurt now though). Have I burned my skin? Should I change my routine now (just face wash, spot treatment, and patches usually with the peel once a week).

This was the 4th time I used it, and the rest of my skin is absolutely fine after use, with no redness or sensitivity.

2
mahalnamahal•

You should probably not use it until your skin barrier is fully healed and just do simple cleanser and moisturizer. Next time patch test your jaw and see if the reaction occurs again. If it does, you should discontinue use. Or possibly increase time between days you use it. Or a week and a half.

MR_CoolFreak•

What’s the white stuff (looks like flaky skin) all over the face? I can remove it with just water

2
Chitons•

Either flaking skin or products rubbing off.

Hi friends! I’m new. Do y’all have recommendations for an eye cream and a serum?

None of the eye creams I’ve tried seem hydrating enough. I’m noticing more fine lines around my eyes. My skin is combination.

1
BecsRaySpex•

I’m rotating around among eye creams all the time these days but some current favorites are the new Youth to the People Dream Eye Cream (very soothing, has ceramides) and the Peach & Lily Pure Peach Retinoic Eye Cream (anti-aging, has bakuchiol!) [ETA: I also like the Inkey List Caffeine eye cream in the morning, especially nice for de-puffing when kept in a refrigerator!]

Re: serums — do you have any particular concerns you’re interested in addressing? There’s just tons of serums out there, and they’re so individual to each person’s needs. FWIW, if you’re interested in Vitamin C and/or Niacinamide serums (two of the most common), I wrote some quizzes you can check out here. (Note: I stick to cruelty-free products, so all possible results there are cruelty-free, i.e. not tested on animals). But I can also come up with other suggestions if you had something else in mind!

When you start to build muscle they may show again, it’s hard to say but I’m willing to bed yes. Don’t let that discourage you from lifting. I got my first stretch mark at 14 from weight training, they aren’t just from weight gain and loss so don’t be embarrassed of them. You could try incorporating collagen into your diet, I love collagen peptides in my coffee they’re flavorless and easy. Also I just started using bio oil so I can speak of its efficacy but it is supposed to help with visible stretch marks. and scars. Congrats on the weight loss :)

Hello!

So I've been debating whether to get the clinique dramatically different hydrating gel or keeping it classic with cerave's moisturizing cream.

I currently use the foaming facial cleanser along with the cerave moisturizing cream (in the tub) in the PM and in the AM I wash my face with water and use the Biore UV suncreen perfect milk.

For reference I have oily skin. Also open to any other suggestions!

Oh and has anyone used the Biore Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser? Would you recommend if so in exchange for Cerave's Foaming Facial Cleanser? Thanks!

1
cheesecakeno5164•

tbh the clinique isnt that good for its price. Infact I personally also have oily skin and much prefer the cerave. Maybe get a sample to make sure you like it before you splurge?

2
sundaysundayy•

If you wouldn’t mind a different gel moisturizer, you might want to try Versed’s Dew Point! My skin is combination and I use gel moisturizers in the warmer months. I have the Clinique one you mentioned and I really don’t think it’s worth the price to me when the versed one works better for me for much cheaper :)

2
Arrenox•

I'll check it out!

Do you know any big stores that carry it?

Also what cleanser do you use?

This is one of few masks I actually have repurchased because I like it so much! It is really great for calming down my skin after any sort of irritation and the feeling of the mask itself is a super relaxing experience.

The website Gilt has it available for $35 instead of $50 something it retails for too :)

I'm in my 3rd week of Differin and currently in the purging phase. The purging is not that bad (better than my usual breakouts) since I have a simple and hydrating routine (no active other than differin). I'm wondering if I can use a niacinamide serum (Cosrx Ac Serum 4% Niacinamide) on nights with no differin. I'm concerned that I'm too early to introduce other products since I just started differin.

1
cheesecakeno5164•

hi fellow differin user!

for me personally, I didnt have much trouble incorporating another serum into my routine.

I got my first cyst acne ever .. it was just a bump under my skin for 2 months, then it went red and really plump over a week

I went to the doctor, the gave me a shot, and it shrunk considerably

However, the acne went from really plump to a really purple bump, and it has been a week

What can I do to improve it, doc just said to wait for it to heal, but it's really getting to me.

1
cheesecakeno5164•

theres nothing you can really do to it apart from wait for it to heal unfortunately.

3
fanfanye•

I'll just use a bandaid to cover it then

At least I can use a mask all times except eating

Is it safe to use chemical exfoliants on my face when i have a pimple that has been popped or is inflamed?

1
musicist10•

I personally would not use a chemical exfoliant over a popped pimple because it would sting and irritate the already sensitive area, making it more inflamed. Maybe stick a pimple patch over the area to protect from irritants and hydrate the area.

3
Shookt123•

Alright, thank you! Its a good thing i stocked up on some pimple patches recently haha.

Which products/brands should I go for, when I want to make a routine?

It's been a while, since I last took care of my skin or had a skincare routine. The routine consisted of a cleanser, moisturizer and a serum. Cleanser and moisturizer in the morning, then cleanser and serum in the evening. It was pretty manageable for me, since it was just 3 products.

But I moved to another country and haven't been able to get those products again.

I have normal-oily skin, but I usually start to get dry patches when it gets colder, so they have slowly started to form.

I live in Denmark, so would be great if I could get the products in a store here, instead of online.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Inevitable_Ant5838•

It all really depends on you.

What specific problems are you looking to take care of? Acne? Skin tone/texture? Anti-aging?

If you're just going for *basic* care, then a simple routine is fine: double cleanse, moisturizer, sunscreen.

It's when you decide to address more specific issues that you add the extra serums, ampoules, etc.

As far as brands, I really like DECIEM/The Ordinary products. They're simple, effective, and cheap. But most people suggest that this company is for more advanced, or knowledgeable, skincare users, of which I am not, but I use their products anyway and learn as I go!

Asian skincare products are very popular, as far as anti-aging and hydration, and most asian products are very cheap. I'm trying to move away from asian products, however, just because they use so much plastic for their packaging :/

I hope this helps!

What are these small bumps on my face? They’re all over my cheeks but nowhere else. They popped up about 6weeks ago and haven’t gone away or improved at all.

Current Routine: AM Wash with CeraVe foaming Ole Henrickson truth serum Sunscreen or moisturizer (Cerave)

PM Wash with CeraVe foaming Skinceuticals blemish and age defense CeraVe moisturizer

I quit my curology formula and switched to Skinceuticals a week ago. My curology was tretinoin/niacinamide/clindamycin. These bumps were present before I quit curology and have not changed since.

I wear a mask for 3- 12 hour shifts a week. My diet is pretty chock full of sugar right now and exercise isn’t a lot because Covid.

Thanks!!

Looks like fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis) to me, I had it on my chest, neck and forehead and ketoconazole shampoo (used as a wash, let sit for a couple minutes before rinsing) got rid of it for me. I used non-prescription Nizoral. I may be wrong, though, so you might want to check with a derm! I’m no expert

1
Justanotherflower•

Thanks for the recommendation! How long did you have to use the nizoral before it helped? And then at what point did you stop using it?

1
ramentacos•

Unfortunately I can’t recall, but I got through about half a bottle before not needing it anymore. I guess it depends on how bad it is. I used it 2-3 times a week, and gradually decreased as it got better until I no longer needed it. Occasionally the fungal acne will come back, however, and when that happens I’ll use it 2-3 times and that will usually help keep it at bay. While this was sufficient for me, I know certain ingredients trigger malassezia and there are many resources online with products that are safe for fungal acne, so you may want to check if any products in your routine may be triggering it and swap them for a “safe” alternative. Hope this helps!

1
Inevitable_Ant5838•

It could be fungal acne, but they could also just be closed comedones. It's really hard to tell the difference between the two, and both types of "bumps" thrive and exist in similar environments. I have so many of those bumps and still haven't figured out how to get rid of them! I haven't attempted to address them like fungal acne yet, so maybe that's what they are for me. But as ramentacos suggested, try taking care of them as if they're fungal. Who knows?

Can I shave my face in the morning if I'm going to be using a BHA in the evening?

It's probably fine, but try it and see how your skin responds.
